Thin architrave wood that can flex to any imperfections in your wall is best. Draw the position of each panel in pencil on the wall then cut the wood to size. You’ll need a mitre saw for the corners. Using a spirit level, start with the top piece, then attach side pieces loosely with glue. Wiggle them into place, before finishing with the bottom piece. Don’t have the space to accommodate a freestanding island? A peninsula can sit in the same space but simply connects to a wall – so what would have been a walkway becomes additional workspace instead. A peninsula doesn’t have to be overly long, but just a metre or two will provide valuable extra prep space. Gain extra storage as it can include cupboards, drawers and shelving both sides. Sugar soap can be harsh on your skin so wear gloves. Next, sanding is key as it helps the paint to stick.
