Surfing is a weird balance of stats and not caring about stats. Sometimes, we like to catch waves and forget about thinking or feeling or doing or being. Other times, we press our surf watches to record wave lengths, how many kilometres we’ve paddled, the quantity of waves we’ve caught, because digits speak for themselves. They help tell our stories: a hectic sardinepacked point break, or a serene sunrise with an entire beach break to ourselves. We find strength, maybe a little hope, in numbers.
