THE AUSTRALIAN CONSUMER watchdog, ACCC, took Apple to court in April last year for its uncompromising repair and warranty policy, specifically regarding the Error 53 bug that plagued iOS users in 2016. The ACCC alleged that the tech giant made “false, misleading, or deceptive representations on consumer guarantees” that are protected under Australian Consumer Law. The ACCC has won the case, with a federal court slapping Apple with a $9 million fine. The legal action was the result of an investigation conducted by the ACCC after numerous iPhones and iPads generated the error while updating to iOS 9, which had a feature that could detect if a device had undergone third-party repairs. THE SONY A8F is a 4K OLED flatscreen that oozes class, and sports a picture that will have you instantly hankering to upgrade. That’s a blunt but straightforward way to introduce it. Available in 55-inch and 65-inch screen sizes (we tested the big fella), the A8F sports a classic design aesthetic, unlike the lean-back Sony A1 model. Access shared folders on a Mac IF YOU WANT TO ACCESS A SHARED MAC FOLDER FROM A WINDOWS PC, YOU FIRST NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT THE MAC IS USING SMB INSTEAD OF APPLE FILING PROTOCOL. HOME MESH NETWORK kits first started appearing about two years ago, and since then, many of the networking industry’s leading brands have released their own take on the technology. What mesh kits do it create a seamless multi-node network that works far better than older range extenders. You can set down multiple wireless access points — as many as you need to cover your home — and wander around the house, seamlessly roaming from one access point to the next without having to reconnect or losing internet connectivity. Your camera has a range of options for setting the colour temperature and removing colour casts. The default option is Auto White Balance, where the camera sets the colour temperature automatically. It can work well in mixed lighting, but can be a bit heavy-handed — sunsets can look a bit insipid with AWB, for example. Also, it doesn’t guarantee consistency between pictures, which may be a problem if you shoot a sequence. Using one of the white balance presets, which are arranged according to lighting type, does retain the same setting across a series of shots. You may also be able to set the colour temperature in degrees Kelvin (K) manually, or set a custom white balance. SINCE IT WAS revealed that upwards of 87 million Facebook users worldwide had their data collected by Cambridge Analytica, the social media behemoth has come under considerable scrutiny over concerns of user privacy and the security of the personal information that it keeps. 2018 IS GOING to be another year without a new Surface Pro, so Microsoft’s competitors are putting out new top-of-the-line 2-in-1s with the idea of making 2018 their year instead. Enter the Dell Latitude 5290, a detachable device that the Texas manufacturer hopes will capture some of that 2-in-1 territory. HOW DOES DATA travel from one part of your network to another? The answer lies in the TCP/IP model. TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) is the method used by computers to connect over networks, while IP (Internet Protocol) is the way in which data is broken down into ‘packets’ of information and transferred. Each packet is labelled in such a way as to make it clear where it’s come from and what its destination is.
