THE DOCK HAS a number of options that can make it even more useful, yet they aren’t available in its System Preferences pane. To access them, you’ll need to use either Terminal (/Applications/Utilities) or try TinkerTool (see below).
Before you begin, make sure you have a recent backup of your entire system – Terminal is very powerful, and could muck things up unless you’re very careful.
Also backup the Dock’s current settings: in Finder, hold Opt and choose Go > Library. From the folder that opens, copy com.apple.dock.plist to another folder. To undo the changes, copy this back to the original folder, replacing the one you changed, then open Terminal, type killall Dock, then press Return.
