Sitting in a cafe in July 2019, I absent-mindedly ran my fingers along my neck, only to freeze when I felt hard lumps beneath my skin. ‘That’s weird,’ I muttered. At 19, I’d been experiencing relentless night sweats and had a nagging cough, along with losing weight, which I’d chalked up to my gym routine finally paying off.
I went to my GP, who ordered blood tests, a chest X-ray, a CAT scan, and three needle biopsies on my neck. Each result came back negative.
‘It could be a type of pneumonia,’ he suggested, prescribing antibiotics.
