With his blond hair and blue eyes, my boyfriend *James, 21, was gorgeous. But whenever he visited the flat I lived in with Mum, weird things happened.
One night in 1999, as James, my mum Julie, then 41, and I were having dinner, the ceiling light began to sway – gently at first, then harder, back and forth, like a pendulum.
‘There must be a draft,’ I said, but the door was shut.
The swinging light stopped as suddenly as it had started.
‘What caused that?’
James whispered. ‘I don’t know,’ I said. Then while we watched TV, the channel kept changing and the volume kept going up and down. ‘This place is weird,’
