As adults, we’re probably not often surprised. We generally know what to expect in situations, especially if that situation relates to something we’ve been involved in, or familiar with, for a long time, like, for many of us, motorcycling.
Sometimes we’ll have misunderstood something – for example, not many years ago I was surprised when, in a motorcycle context, I learned cooking meant ‘standard.’ I’d always thought (had deduced myself ) it meant ‘hot,’ so not standard. In non-motorcycling spheres, I recently discovered the children’s game is ‘What’s the time, Mr Woolf?’ I’d literally always thought it was ‘What’s the time, Mr Wharf?’ It was explained to me, our primary school played the Wharf version, as our school caretaker was Mr (Charlie) Wharf, and the game had been adapted.
