As the world seeks to emerge from the hardships caused by a global pandemic, it seems to me we are also entering a new golden age of exploration. While the nitty-gritty work of explorers often remains looking at the fine detail of our world with ever-greater resolution, I cannot help but also be in awe of the extremes we are now able to explore with ever-greater ease, due to the exponential improvements in the technologies that support exploration. This year is the first year of the UN Decade of Ocean Science. The deepest seas have been unlocked by machines such as the DSV Limiting Factor, built by Club Medalist Victor Vescovo. Surveying the 80 percent of the previously inaccessible seas will be critical to understanding and protecting our fragile oceans.…
