THIS July marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of that remarkable woman Beatrix Potter. Artist, illustrator, botanist, conservationist, astute businesswoman, farmer and breeder of prize-winning pedigree Herdwick sheep, she was, above all, the best-loved and most-successful author of children’s books. She wrote and illustrated 23 “little books”, published by Frederick Warne & Co, that have been translated into more than 35 languages, remain in print around the globe and have sold in excess of 100 million copies. Since 1949, when they were first produced, countless children have been given Wedgwood Peter Rabbit nursery-ware sets as christening presents and the now discontinued Beswick Beatrix Potter china figurines are highly collectible.
