I had been holding fire on composing my editorial for this issue in the hope that the King of the Air had run a bit earlier in the waiting period and I could draw on that for some inspirational editorial insights. Our journey kicked off one morning, fueled by an optimistic forecast for Dakhla that I had been closely monitoring the week prior. The conditions looked promising, prompting me to swiftly book flights for myself and Joeri Bijlsma, the dedicated filmmaker accompanying me to capture content for my social media channels. Booking our flights on the fly, we were en route to the airport by 1pm. Our journey included a stopover in Casablanca before reaching Dakhla at midnight. FREESTYLE-KITE WORLD CUP 01 CAUIPE LAGOON 28 men and 14 women from 18 nations took part in the Freestyle discipline, many of whom had been training hard in Cauipe before the event. Cauipe’s famous butter-flat lagoon and consistent strong breezes helped the athletes to push their limits and the boundaries, coming into the competition with an arsenal of new and improved tricks. Big opening performances from some athletes returning to the tour served notice that there would be no easy victories for the top ranked riders. “Watch out, Abo, here comes a wide set!” More focused on his handline than the massive swell lines rolling in, Abo my Fijian longboat driver instantly kicked the trusty Yamaha 40 outboard into gear. Andre: Another Brazil season comes to an end. As always it’s been an awesome one, but a bit of a different one for me because now I have a number of jobs shooting other sports that end up being around the same time. So I definitely didn’t get to stay in Brazil for as long as I would have liked. I still managed to see some old friends and shoot at my favorite spots with some incredible riders that have also become great friends throughout the years. Let’s start with the obvious, the wind. The prevailing wind direction in the UK is a southwesterly. This provides the mainly south-facing south coast a clean wind from the right, with good swell from the Atlantic. From 20 years of kiting around the world, I can safely say finding starboard Big Air conditions with great kickers is a rarity. Only in Taiwan have I found similar conditions. Arthur: I was very excited to go to Pallas because it was a crazy new experience in a new country for me. I had already done a bit of snowkiting before in France, but in the mountains, and never in such wide-open unspoiled spots.
