JO ALLPORT has many strings to her bow. As well as being an independent knitwear designer, she also creates patterns for a range of yarn companies including Araucania, Mirasol, Noro, Lotus and Blacker Yarns, runs her own online knitting store, creates knitting kits, teaches workshops, and designs for knitting magazines. We’re delighted to feature her first pattern for The Knitter on our front cover, and we will have more beautiful designs from her in future issues. We talked to Jo about how she began working in the knitwear industry, and about her knitting career and design influences. I love designing, but I’d avoided garments for a while, as my head was so chock-full of ideas I couldn’t decide on what to do. Eventually I realised that what I really wanted to design and wear was a 4ply, fitted V-neck cardigan in canary yellow. It’s a simple stocking stitch design, with waist shaping at the back and front, and a garter stitch neckband. I used KnitPicks Palette, which is available in every colour under the sun and was very enjoyable to work with. It’s also good value for money and goes a long way! NAMED AFTER a beach on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, this design by Alison Green for Juniper Moon Farm has a lacy seashell motif paired with a garter stitch body. ELEGANT SLANTING lines, bold lace and an exceptional yarn combine to create these gorgeous socks by Clare Devine. WHILE KNITTING is often synonymous with winter, the promise of warmer weather needn’t mean the end of the knitting season. There’s a wealth of beautiful fibres perfect for summer knits. “THIS DESIGN was inspired by art nouveau ironwork that I spotted in a doorway in Epernay, France,” says Emma Vining. “The trellis pattern is made with twisted stitches and cables, while textured bobbles are used for the rosebuds. AUSTRALIA IS famous for its wool industry. The first sheep arrived in 1788, and the merino breed was introduced at the end of the 18th century. Today, this vast country has huge numbers of sheep and 30,000 sheep farmers, producing 300 million kilograms of wool per year. There is just a small number of growers producing superfine merino wool, however, and in recent decades most of their yarn has been bought up by the apparel industry to make high-quality suits, particularly in Italy. Hand-knitters have not had easy access to the wonderful, superfine merino yarn produced Down Under – until now.
