LEEDS SHOW Spring Into Wool is a popular event held every year in Leeds, and this year’s show takes place on 13-14 April. THE ISLANDS of West and East Burra, with their white sandy beaches and beautiful shorelines, lie just ten miles from Shetland’s capital, Lerwick. Nestled in this beautiful location is Donna Smith’s home, on the croft that her grandparents farmed and where she grew up. Donna hasn’t come to designing knitwear through a traditional route – but then, the people who live in the Shetland Islands are resourceful, adaptable and, above all, creative. HAILING FROM the Orkney Islands, Lucy Hague is an influential designer who is most famous for her intricate, Celtic-inspired cable patterns. We talked with Lucy about her knitting life. Who inspired you to take up knitting? “I was always very interested in arts and crafts when I was a child, and my mother taught me to knit when I was very young. I used to knit lots of clothes for my dolls. Q I’ve come across a reference to the modified SSK. What is it used for, and how is it worked? A This is a slight variation on the standard SSK left-leaning decrease, and some knitters find that using this method helps the decrease to lie flatter. 1 Slip 1 stitch knitwise. 2 Slip 1 stitch purlwise. 3 Insert left needle tip into the front of the 2 slipped stitches on the right needle. 4 Knit these 2 stitches together (you are effectively knitting them together through the back loops, without the bother of returning them to your left needle tip first). TRADITIONAL WELSH blankets, woven from double-cloth, are much prized for their bold patterning. Taking inspiration from these textiles, Carol Meldrum has created a cosy, modern poncho with a bright pattern in stranded colourwork. The poncho is worked as one long rectangle; stitches are picked up along each side to work the garter stitch edgings. The upper edge includes button holes, so that it can be formed into a poncho shape using buttons sewn on to the opposite section. “MY LINKED leaf stitch pattern has similar properties to a rib-based design, as the curving cable lines run parallel to each other.
