NELLIE AND Eve is an indie dye brand run by Helen Hickman, and is named after her two grandmothers. Helen produces plant-dyed yarns in her garden studio in West Wales, and we spoke with her about what it’s like to dye yarn for a living. When did you first try dyeing yarn? “It was when I was very young, when, in the garden with a pot of blackberries and some wool taken from my mother’s knitting basket, I tried to create purple to knit a jumper for my doll. THE MOVE across the world from Australia to the UK is a huge one to make, particularly if you’re one half of a business specialising in hand-dyed yarns and fibres for spinning. Nevertheless, that’s what Rachael Prest did 2014 when she relocated to Bristol, and Australia’s loss was the UK yarn community’s benefit. When Rachael sold Cathy Johnson her first spinning wheel in Australia, they both immediately realised they were on the same wavelength. Says Rachael: “Cat and I both ran our own hand-spun yarn businesses at the time - Cat’s Cauldron, and The Sparrow Makes - and we decided to pool our resources.” And so Cat and Sparrow was born. “We started dyeing fibre as well as spinning yarn, and we exhibited at the Bendigo Sheep and Wool Show…

Kristin Blom PERSEID THIS WRAP designed by Kristin Blom was inspired by summer evenings, and has a vintage feel. It features a pattern of slipped stitches combined with stripes and small cable details; the stripe pattern of blue and white includes a single accent stripe in red. “This wrap offers enough pattern to keep you entertained, but is repetitive enough to be fun and easy to make as well,” says Kristin. ROSA POMAR Concha Socks “CONCHA SOCKS (meias de concha), which are still made in certain regions of north-east Portugal as men’s work socks, are an excellent example of the use of slipped stitches to produce two-coloured mosaic patterns.
