BASED IN the north-east of England, Brambles & Me is a natural dye business owned and run by Mia Malone. Mia’s colourways are produced using natural dye extracts in shades inspired by nature. We chatted with Mia about how she established herself as an indie dyer, and how she creates her colours. “I WAS lucky enough to visit Shetland Wool Week in 2018 with a group of friends from the UK and America,” says Juliet Bernard. “We received a warm welcome, laughed, learned and met people from all over the world. One of the workshops I took was with Donna Smith, and covered designing hat crowns, using traditional designs as inspiration. IN THE late 1970s, Stephen Sheard and Simon Cockin went into partnership to produce weaving kits for sale to craft markets around the UK. They named the business Rowan, inspired by the beautiful shrubs lining the banks of the river Holme in Yorkshire, an area deeply entwined in Britain’s textile heritage.
