THINK OF the knitting traditions of Scotland’s coastal communities, and it’s likely that gansey sweaters will come to mind. These humble, everyday garments, worn by working people for generations, occupy a special place in the hearts of people in Scottish fishing communities, and gansey knitting is much admired and practised today by knitters around the world. A project launched in 2020, called Knitting the Herring, aims to collect and preserve historic examples of fishing ganseys, and record the stitch patterns and constructions used. Spearheaded by the Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther, the project team has been curating a national collection of Scottish ganseys, along with an archive of knitting patterns and photographs accessible to anyone interested in this textile tradition. MOLLY PLUMMER runs The Mimo Yarn Co., a small-batch indie dye studio where she creates hand-dyed gems filled with colour and joy. We chatted with Molly about her hand-dyeing adventures. When did you first try dyeing yarn? “I first had a play with dyeing yarn back in 2018 at Sweet Georgia Yarns in Vancouver, Canada. I got back to the UK in May 2019 and started playing full-time with dyes and different yarn fibres, and just loved the process. SOMETIME IN the middle of February, I scan my ewes to see how many lambs they are brewing. That day marks the change in my mindset from maintaining the ewes through winter, to supporting them in the charge towards giving birth. Because, thankfully, the days are lengthening, the grass shows a bit of green, and the birds are nesting, Spring is coming - and so are the lambies! Scanning the ewes is vital to discover how many lambs each is pregnant with. The different requirements of ewes having one lamb and those having three is huge, and treating all sheep the same is just not consistent with good welfare.
