The design team at Quail Studio has been inspired by the colours and textures of the British coastline for its latest seasonal pattern booklet, 4 Projects Breeze. ‘River’ is a relaxed T-shirt top with a large twisted cable detail at the centre front, and complementary diamond cables at each side; it’s knitted here in a soft, sun-bleached blue shade. Q I’ve been trying the Magic Loop method for socks, but I find I get ladders. How can I avoid these? A The Magic Loop method uses a single circular needle for working small circumferences, but many knitters find that they achieve a looser tension at the point where the cable is pulled through. This uneven tension can create a ladder (1) and is common when knitting on circular needles or sets of double-pointed needles. Many tutorials advise that you work a really tight stitch when starting work on a new set of stitches. I FIRST became aware of the Ziggurat construction method developed by the Swedish designer, Åsa Tricosa, when a customer asked me if I had a book of the designs. I’d never heard of Ziggurats as a knit design, only as a Mesopotamian stepped pyramid! Åsa explains that her top-down, seamless designs are a bit architectural in construction, and the name Ziggurats came to her after she had zigged and zagged with the designs for a while. I knitted my first Ziggurat at the end of last year; a simple jumper with a thin cable detail on the seams and hem, called ‘Chatoyant’.
