PART 3: MAKING YARN
THE ARRIVAL of my first two Border Leicester lambs, Martha and Minnie, back in 1995 was the start of a very long learning process for me. I began visiting auctions to grow my small flock, and new faces joined us: Maud, Mavis, Natalie, Annie, Dennis. Raquel, Rosie, Sally, Leanne, Toyah… Within a couple of years my flock had grown to 100 sheep, who I adored.
We began selling shearling rams (aged about 15 months) to farmers as breeding stock, but the small amount of money this brought in didn’t go a long way towards feeding our hungry sheep. We had also been showing at County Shows - Border Leicesters have wonderful fleeces, and we often came home with championship medals, which was really uplifting. Spinners began…
