Much-loved British designer Erika Knight has teamed up with Bath-based store A Yarn Story to create a capsule collection of designs using the shop’s in-house yarn range, Walcot Yarns Origin - a blend of Argentinian Merino and Peruvian Highland wool. The five gloriously colourful designs include ‘Date Night’, a contemporary intarsia jumper with graphic blocks of colour and a narrow central cabled panel. WHEN A project calls for a stretchy cast-on for ribbing, many knitters opt for a tubular method, as this gives a neat and tidy edge with plenty of ‘give’. There are lots of different ways to work a tubular cast-on, with some requiring waste yarn or a provisional cast-on – which I personally find a bit fiddly. So I was delighted when I came across the alternating cable cast-on technique, which produces a tidy, stretchy and stable edging for ribbing, and is a simple and quick alternative to tubular methods. This technique gives a neat edge where the rib stitches blend invisibly into the cast-on edge with an almost rounded look (see our swatch, top left) – just as with a tubular cast-on.
