“I’M A born and bred Shetlander - my family have been on our croft for literally hundreds of years, and although it’s small, each part of it is precious in its own right,” says Hazel Mackenzie proudly as we discuss her family croft, and their business, Aister ‘oo’: a wool, seasonal produce and homewares company based on Scotland’s Shetland Islands. “Every day is different, and I love the variety of croft life,” says Hazel fondly, “although there can be a lot of rain and wind – some people find the weather exhausting. THIS VERSATILE drawstring bag is ideal for the beach, for shopping trips or even for storing your work-in-progress. The front and back pieces incorporate a folded channel at the top, through which are threaded two long strips of i-cord; two small loops are knitted and attached to the bottom of the bag, through which the drawstrings are anchored. Designer Ella Burch has used Scheepjes Stonewashed XL, an aran-weight blend of cotton and acrylic that comes in a choice of 52 colours and is machine-washable. COMBINING THE coolness of cotton with the luxurious softness of cashmere, Rowan’s Cotton Cashmere is a truly special yarn. “THIS TOP has a soft handle - a bit like a hug!” says Mary Henderson. “I’ve used two yarns from Yarnsmiths: Kid Mohair Silk laceweight, which is worked with two strands held together, while the Merino DK is used singly over the Fair Isle and dot patterns. They are delightful together - soft, yet lightweight. “The tee is worked top down, with a rolled neck, short cap sleeves, and a split hem. Positive ease of a few inches makes layering possible, but the tee is light and soft enough to wear on its own. THIS TANK top by Chloé Elizabeth Birch has a plush, bouncy fabric, thanks to the use of MillaMia’s Naturally Soft Aran yarn. This is a pure Merino wool which comes in a range of neutral and vibrant colours. Chloé has used a hot pink and warm ochre for her stranded colourwork design, with a bright teal for the mock rib edgings around the hems, armhole openings and neck. A FASCINATING pattern of lace diamonds decorates this beautiful wrap, designed for us by Bronagh Miskelly. The wrap is knitted in two symmetrical pieces; the first half begins with a provisional cast-on, which is then undone to work the second half. Bronagh has used Solstice, the new 4ply yarn from West Yorkshire Spinners which comes in eight warm shades. PATTERN NOTES This wrap is worked from a provisional cast-on at the centre to give a symmetrical finish. The pattern gives two options for the provisional cast-on. “MORDROS IS a Cornish word meaning ‘the sound of the sea’,” explains Steph Thornton. Her lightweight, floaty sweater design is knitted in her own hand-dyed Egyptian Lace from her Perran Yarns range, and just three skeins are required for the largest size. This versatile design can also be knitted in a 4ply yarn of your choice, for a thicker fabric.
