Light and shadow often inspire Jeff Fioravanti (fioravantifineart.com), but in this case, his memory of a favorite walk on the beach was the impetus for his award-winning painting, Come Sundown. Although the artist usually starts off with a small study, this time he dove in without a preliminary drawing. Working from a photo, he first created a loose, abstract pastel underpainting on UART 400 8-ply board, blocking in the masses with local color, and then washed it down with 70 percent isopropyl alcohol. “Local color gives me a good base from which to work,” he says.
Next, the artist moved to softer pastels, using a variety that included Unison, Ludwig, Rembrandt, Blue Earth, Holbein, Sennelier, Great American, Schmincke, Richeson and others. “I might only use one…
