There had been a permanent English colonial presence in North America since the establishment of Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. English and Scottish colonies then grew to stretch from Canada in the north to the Mississippi River in the west and Florida in the south. Following the Act of Union between England and Scotland in 1707 and the creation of Great Britain, these colonies became known as ‘British America,’ with a nucleus of ‘Thirteen Colonies’ along the Atlantic coast.
