The National Museum of Brazil announced on May 7 that it had received a donation of more than 1,100 fossils. The gift will help the museum rebuild after it was severely damaged in a fire in 2018. The donor, Burkhard Pohl, has the world’s largest private fossil collection.
The 200-year-old museum is the oldest scientific institution in Brazil. On September 2, 2018, an electrical problem caused a fire that destroyed about 85% of its 20 million artifacts, including mummies, dinosaur fossils, and an entire collection of insects and spiders. Restoration began in 2021, and the museum is set to reopen in 2026.
