On October 10, María Corina Machado, a political leader in Venezuela, received the Nobel Peace Prize for her work fighting for democracy. The award was among the 2025 Nobel Prizes announced from October 6–10.
The Nobel Prizes, created by Alfred Nobel (1833–1896), a Swedish inventor, scientist, and businessman, are the world’s most prestigious honors. Since 1901 they have recognized groundbreaking achievements in six categories: peace, medicine or physiology, physics, chemistry, literature, and economics.
Machado, age 58, began her political career in 2002 as co-founder of Súmate, an organization that defends citizens’ rights and monitors elections for fairness.
