Australian researchers have discovered a potential biomarker for sudden infant death syndrome, reports CNN.com. Around 3,400 babies die in the U.S. each year from SIDS, usually in their sleep, and scientists haven’t pinpointed what causes it. The new study compared blood samples from 655 healthy babies with samples from 26 infants who died from SIDS. Treating back pain with ibuprofen and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may end up prolonging the agony, a new study suggests. Researchers analyzing the health records of 500,000 British adults found that those who used NSAIDs for a sore back had a 70 percent higher risk of developing long-term pain than those who took alternatives. Further evidence comes from experiments on mice, in which NSAIDs led to a reduction in neutrophils—the white blood cells involved in inflammation. When the researchers deliberately blocked neutrophils in the mice, it prolonged their pain by up to 10 times. An examination of 98 human patients yielded similar results: genes linked to inflammation, in particular to neutrophils, were more active in those whose pain recovered faster.
