Scientists have released a new, high-resolution map of the entire moon using data from China’s recent lunar missions, reports Space.com. Until now, the standard for lunar cartography has been the U.S. Geological Survey’s map, which has a resolution of 1:5,000,000. To create the new map, Chinese researchers digitized previously released maps of varying scales, including data from the U.S., Japan, and India. Then it combined them, using radar and satellite images taken by China’s Chang’e-5 lunar exploration mission, to create one consistent, large-scale survey. With a resolution of 1:2,500,000, the map shows 12,341 impact craters, 81 impact basins, 17 rock types, and 14 other kinds of structures.
