The Bandit Warlords of Zamfara, a documentary by BBC Africa Eye, brings us intimately into the world of the gunmen and terrorists who abduct and kill Nigerians in the populous northwestern state. One of these “bloodthirsty criminals” describes his part in the kidnapping of some 300 girls from a secondary school. (They were released weeks later, after a ransom was paid.) Another boasts that he has lost count of how many abductees he has killed. The producers claim that interviews with such vile men help us understand the impact of terrorism on Nigeria. “The time for mincing words is over” about Ron DeSantis’ “barely hidden fascism,” said Will Bunch in The Philadelphia Inquirer. Surrounded by uniformed cops, the Florida governor and likely 2024 GOP presidential candidate announced last week that his Orwellian Office of Election Crimes and Security had arrested 20 Floridians for “voter fraud.” Those hauled off in handcuffs were mostly Black and from majority-Democratic counties, and several of them told journalists they had mistakenly thought they’d regained voting rights after Floridians overwhelmingly approved a 2018 referendum enfranchising most ex-felons. (Catapult, $20) “This is a brave book that is also a little bit insane,” said Nathan Deuel in the Los Angeles Times. Ten million children in the United States can’t access the vision care they need. For more than 20 years, EyeCare4Kids (eyecare4kids.org) has tried to rectify that by offering eye exams and glasses to children in low-income communities around the country. The charity has eight eye-care clinics across Utah, Nevada, New Jersey, and Arizona, and aims to eventually have a vision clinic in every major city. EyeCare4Kids also runs a mobile outreach program that brings vision care to schools, Native American reservations, and rural areas. Inside the mobile clinics, children can receive eye exams and pick out new glasses or contact lenses. British visitors tend to bring patients in the hospital grapes instead of flowers—and that may be hugely beneficial, reports The Independent (U.K.). Eating the fruit could extend human life by five years and reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s. A new study of mice has found that the specific antioxidants in grapes improve neuron function, protecting the brain from developing dementia. Researchers put female mice on high-fat diets, with half of the group also receiving grape supplements. When they compared the liver, brain, and metabolic health of the mice, they saw that the group that ate grapes had higher metabolism, a longer life span, and a reduced risk of fatty liver disease. But wait until you see what’s not covered. “Medicare is the largest single purchaser of prescription drugs in the country, and prescriptions are the program’s fastest-growing expense.” The hope is that cutting the prices Medicare pays can lower drug costs across the board. Unfortunately, the negotiations will cover just 10 drugs in 2026, rising gradually to 40 in 2029, and will not include drugs that have been marketed for less than nine years (for conventional drugs) and 13 years (for biotech products)—“close to the end of their patent-protected life span.” That means the rules don’t apply…

One of the rare foreign directors to find prolonged success in Hollywood, Wolfgang Petersen vaulted to fame with his 1981 anti-war masterpiece Das Boot. Raymond Damadian never got his due. That, at least, was the fervent conviction of the physician himself, who revolutionized medical diagnostics by building the first magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner in 1977. Chicago Barre Seid, a secretive electronics manufacturing mogul, donated $1.65 billion—possibly the biggest political contribution in U.S. history—to a nonprofit run by Leonard Leo, a prime architect of the successful campaign to install conservatives across the judiciary, The New York Times reported this week. Over the past two years, Seid, 90, donated all his shares of Chicago-based electric-equipment maker Tripp Lite to Leo’s group, which then collected the 10-figure sum that an Irish conglomerate paid to acquire Seid’s company. Vegetarian women are much more likely to break a hip in old age than those who eat meat or fish, reports The Times (U.K.). In a study of 27,000 women ages 35 to 69, researchers at the University of Leeds found that as the women grew older, the vegetarians were 33 percent more likely to break their hips than their meat-eating peers. Pescatarians, though, who eat fish but not meat, were no more likely to fracture their hips than carnivores. Over the course of the 20-year study, about 3 percent of the women developed hip fractures, at an average age of 83. One explanation for the disparity is that vegetarians may eat fewer nutrients linked with muscle and bone health. That can lead to lower muscle mass and bone…
