The bill would have raised the age of consent to 18 in West Virginia; currently, minors can marry at 16 with parental consent, or even younger with a judge’s waiver. If you’re stressed, you’re more likely to experience a decline in cognitive function, with difficulties concentrating, remembering, and learning new things. That’s the conclusion of a new study of thousands of older adults who were assessed for cognitive function and stress over more than a decade. Untangling cause and effect was difficult, reports CNN.com, as stress can drive people to unhealthy habits, such as smoking and skipping exercise, that also affect cognition. But once researchers had adjusted for those factors, they found that people with high stress levels were 37 percent more likely to score as impaired on the six-item screener test.
