The Arizona Immigration Cooperation and Enforcement (ICE) Act would have overridden rules like that of the Phoenix Union High School District, which in January barred immigration enforcement agents from its schools. The ICE Act would also have required all state and local officials and law enforcement agencies to assist with ICE detainers—written requests from the agency that ask local law enforcement to hold migrants in jail for 48 hours beyond their scheduled release to turn them over to federal immigration officers. Owning a pet makes you as happy as being married or earning an extra $90,000 a year, a new study has found. Researchers from Britain’s University of Kent drew on data from a nationally representative survey in which members of 2,500 British households were asked how satisfied they were with their lives. It turned out that living with a cat or dog to cuddle was associated with an increase of three to four points on a scale of seven, with one being miserable and seven being perfectly content. We might not be alone in the cosmos. An international team of astronomers has found the strongest evidence yet that there could be life on a planet far from our solar system. Known as K2-18b, the planet was scrutinized because it’s a decent candidate. Just 124 light-years away, it orbits its red dwarf star in the so-called Goldilocks zone of habitability. The researchers believe that the planet has liquid water, and they’ve identified a possible biosignature: The atmosphere appears to show traces of the molecule dimethyl sulfide, which on Earth is exclusively produced by microbes.
