Do you admire people who use language in unusual ways? Chances are if you’re reading this, you do – or you are that person. I love when someone turns a phrase that makes me stop and reconsider conventions or expectations. I have a friend who never gets his verb tenses correct, but his mistakes serve to remind me: Break the rules and discover a new truth. Sometimes he speaks poetry without even knowing it. That’s not to say we should eschew the rules. We hate typos and misspellings when they happen in our writing (and when they happen in our magazine – egads). We strive for grammatical and syntactical perfection. And we’re pretty sure you do, too. But it’s that occasional typo or other mistake – for instance, the difference…

I have a lot of creative writing classes under my belt, but I feel compelled to take more. At what point are classes no longer useful? If you’re still challenged by the classes and you find you’re growing as a writer, why not continue? Generally speaking, good classes are a community of writers. They give you an opportunity to discuss writing with like-minded individuals who are thinking seriously about literature and the craft of writing. As a result, no two classes are exactly the same, even if they are lead by the same instructor. Participants bring unique insights and individual concerns. The opening lines of Phil Klay’s debut story collection Redeployment give the reader an early glimpse of the dark, bewildered humor that will resurface occasionally throughout the book. “We shot dogs,” writes Klay, in a story about a marine serving in Iraq. “Not by accident. We did it on purpose, and we called it Operation Scooby. Animals surround David James Poissant. At first, dogs, cats, birds, rats, guinea pigs and a team of reptiles filled his childhood home. Today, these animals – along with a few more exotic creatures – weave in and out of his short stories, echoing themes and serving as catalysts for the characters’ actions. Although he never set out to write an animal-themed collection, time and again, these creatures crept into his narratives. “I think it’s amazing the way we interact with animals in the natural world,” he says. “We relate to animals, but we also use animals and we abuse them, and I think we do that with people, too. I’d spent countless hours riding that half-pipe and was comfortable with tricks I didn’t try anywhere else. I started by riding down one side, up the other and doing a basic double-peg grind, turning my bike on the top of the curve so I landed sideways on my wheel pegs before dropping back down. A stranger comes to the village and delivers the news. Didi hears a woman’s voice in her yard. She’s upstairs, going through the boys’ old clothes, deciding which ones she wants to keep and which ones to pass down to a neighbor’s children. By understanding basic plot structure, writers can stimulate new ideas, refresh their work and bring their talents to fruition. Script writer Dennis Whitcomb took readers back to the basics with his essay, “Anatomy of a Story,” published by The Writer in July 1968. “The writer of fiction must be as much a craftsman as he is an artist, as much an artist as he is a craftsman,” he writes. Stories are typically either dramatic or comical, beginning with a “disturbance of the status quo,” an incident that derails a character’s day-to-day life. Although writing techniques vary from writer to writer and story to story, I consider four key elements essential for effective writing: accuracy, solid research, lively dialogue and concrete details. Can a writer get something from a book group of nonwriters? Every page was a struggle. Not since grad school had I endured such an awful book. In truth, I would have chucked it long ago if only it hadn’t been this month’s selection by the Men’s Only Book Club. I’ve been a MOBC regular for five years. Fiction writer Ellen Lesser never attended a conference before publishing her work. “Partly, I wonder, ‘What was I thinking?’ because a good conference is such a rich and transforming experience,” she says. After graduating with an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts, she devoted her professional life to the program, first as a member of the writing faculty and then as the director of the school’s Postgraduate Writers’ Conference. With no agent costs and an often increased return on royalties, independent publishers may offer authors less exposure but bigger payoffs. A poet learns about the material of art by watching the craft in action. I don’t know how to make many things, but I am in awe of people who know how to work with materials. Creating a philosophical backstory for characters deepens the plot. WHAT MAKES A CHARACTER LEAP off the page and into readers’ hearts? If you’ve listened hard to your writing teachers and thought about the fiction you love, you’ll probably answer: detailed description (what they wear, how they look, where they live, how they talk), emotional connection (loves, hates, fears, joys, despair) and what happens to them (growth and change, rise and fall, challenge, defeat and victory). When publishers told Karen Avivi that her book Shredded about a girl BMX rider was too niche, she didn’t return to the drawing board. Novelist and short story writer Samrat Upadhyay toggles between two genres. Samrat Upadhyay is a writer who lives in one world and writes about another. He teaches creative writing at the University of Indiana in Bloomington and writes novels and short stories about teachers, tutors, mid-level bureaucrats, adulterers and survivors of the Maoist-Royalist civil war in Nepal. Once upon a time, MK Asante might have been called a renaissance man. In present-day vernacular, the filmmaker, professor, hip-hop artist, essayist and memoirist might be called a multi-talent, multitasker or entrepreneur. Any way you look at it, he’s oozing narrative talent. He caught our eye (and ear) with his memoir Buck, a personal saga of self-reliance in the face of stark odds.
