As summer draws to a close – though in the UK, it seems to have skipped us altogether – I am certainly looking forward to crisp Autumn mornings and the crunch of leaves beneath my feet. So, with this in mind, we filled the pages of this issue with projects that all nod to the new season – from Lynne Goldsworthy’s stunning leaves design in oranges and browns to the Autumn Harvest mini quilt (which even features a little red tractor). BEHIND THE QUILT PERFECT YOUR SKILLS “The Autumn leaves in this quilt are made using strip pieced 2in finished squares, 2in finished half-square triangles (HST), foundation paper pieced (FPP) leaf tips and hand-sewn bias strip stalks, so you will be using a number of skills to make the quilt top. The colours in this fabric line were chosen for an Autumn quilt, but you could also make the leaves in greens and yellows or even go totally scrappy and use a selection of leftover fabrics in a whole range of colours. BEHIND THE QUILT DECO DREAMS “The inspiration for this quilt came from an old Art Deco ceramic tile, which used stylised tree motifs on a background of vibrant blues. For the quilt design, I added some 16-patch blocks made up of multicoloured squares, which I felt was reminiscent of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The original colour scheme was predominantly blues and greens, like the cushion above, but as my previous quilt for Today’s Quilter was mostly blues (Norwegian Nights in issue 84) I changed to a warmer palette for this one. I find that using bright, warm shades has the effect of lifting the spirits, and, surprisingly, the change to yellows and pinks put me in mind of Clarice Cliff ceramic designs. BEHIND THE QUILT SEASONAL LANDSCAPES “This miniature quilt project uses shadow appliqué; shapes are glued in place, a transparent fabric is laid over the top and the design is quilted. This is a quick and easy technique that enables you to produce a small-scale design without having to fuse or appliqué each shape individually. The glue holds the pieces in position, the net ensures the design is secure and the quilting fixes it all in place. 2023 winners This year was a special show for The Festival of Quilts, as it celebrated its 20th anniversary! Also known as a coneflower, echinaceas have become increasingly popular as a garden plant over recent years. Native to the prairies of North America, they have pink or purple flowers and a large orange cone in the centre, which is a seed head. The name arises from the resemblance of the seed head’s sharp spines to a hedgehog, as “echinos” means hedgehog in Greek. The long-lived flowers are excellent for cutting and extremely attractive to bees and butterflies. Archaeologists have found evidence that Native Americans may have used echinacea for more than 400 years to treat infections and wounds.
