THE PATTERN SOMERSET GARDEN Designed by Suzanne Campion for Liberty, this classic Grandmother’s Flower Garden EPP quilt pattern showcases a series of hexagon gardens. Each contains fussy-cut flowers, while the central focus of this beautifully detailed quilt is a star of diamond blocks, leading to larger hexagon blocks. Suzanne still uses a needle case made by her own Grandma in the Grandmother’s Flower Garden pattern. I used the pattern from issue 94 by Raggedy Ruff Designs. This pattern was originally for a tree skirt – I couldn’t give each grandchild a tree skirt, but a cushion is ideal. HST AND QST PROJECT BEHIND THE QUILT HAPPY HOLLY-DAYS! “The holly leaves are really the star of this quilt. I raw-edge appliquéd them, but you could needle-turn appliqué them if preferred. The same applies for the holly berries at the centre of each of the holly leaf blocks. I used a machine blanket stitch around the outside of the leaves and berries – giving a lovely, neat finish to the raw edges. Again, you could hand sew the blanket stitches around the raw edges, or your machine may have other decorative stitches you prefer to use to edge these pieces. I was lucky to have a print for the centre of the Ohio Stars, which has sweet little houses that perfectly fit the middle of the stars. I fussy cut*…
