Has Spring finally arrived? At the time of writing this, it’s a bit hit or miss, some days we have sun, others heavy rain. But that hasn’t stopped us admiring the gorgeous Spring makes in this issue. From Lynne Goldsworthy’s delightful Baskets and Dresden Plates design, bursting with appliqué blooms, to Jo Colwill’s charming patchwork garden... you’ll be surrounded with pretty flowers no matter what the weather decides to do! Linking the blocks This block includes a centre area that has appeared before in previous Blocks of the Month and also features a repeat of the corner rolled-back edges that were in the fourth block in the series. As each block is added, more little details reappear here and there, linking the individual designs into an overall collection that will become the final quilt. Every design has a finished size of 12in x 12in and is then edged with an extra frame of background fabric in a finished width of 1½in. Mary Jenkins fondly recalls sleeping underneath a patchwork bedcover as a child growing up in Pembrokeshire, so she supposes she always had some awareness of quilts. But, until her thirties, it was embroidery that interested her. When Mary took up quilting in the late 1970s, there were limited resources for beginners. She says, “There were very few magazines and tutors, so I taught myself using books. But in 1979, The Quilters’ Guild formed – which I joined early on – and things began to change.” The resurgence of interest in quilting in the UK was in part a result of a nostalgic interest in handicrafts generated by the American Bicentennial in 1976. “I’m ashamed to say that it was American block patterns that excited us back then, with British quilt-making…

BEHIND THE QUILT A MOUSE AND HER QUILTS “Florence lives in an old tree stump house with her squirrel friend, Miss Poppy, who on occasion jests with Florrie about whether they actually need another quilt. Obviously, Florrie pays no attention to this kind of talk. There is always a good reason for a new quilt. “In this block, Spring is here and Florrie is having a good Spring clean. Her quilts have been washed and she is out among the tulips, hanging the washing on the line. BEHIND THE QUILT FLOWERS & SOFT SHADES “The idea for this quilt came from a hotel near my home that has the most wonderful tulip garden, or ‘parterre’, and original chinoiserie hand-painted wallpaper. In order to get the quilt finished quite quickly and because I already had two major hand appliqué projects on the go, I decided to use mainly bonded appliqué for the flowers etc. The fabric is a Moda fabric designed by French General using her lovely subtle blues, greys and soft reds. If you have time, it would be lovely to do traditional hand appliqué, which is my favourite, using my template-free method of appliqué, which is on YouTube and in my books.
