QUILTING STYLES l signature quilts Reliable provenance for historic quilts is rare. Frequently they are not labelled, their stories destined to forever remain a secret. However, signature, or autograph, quilts – a UK phenomenon of the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries – buck that trend. As the moniker suggests, these are quilts into which names and/or initials have been incorporated. Information about where, when and why the quilt was made might also be added, and sometimes motifs and/or inspirational messages can be found, too. Predominantly, signature quilts were made as fundraisers. The mid to late Victorian era was a time of widespread Christian belief and an age when Methodism was strong. BEHIND THE QUILT PERFECTLY IMPERFECT “I have spent some time practising dyeing fabrics in my backyard. As a result, I have accumulated many colours and hues of linen, cotton and wool fabrics. My fabrics are not perfectly dyed, but I enjoy the imperfect and unexpected results of my own work. I put small pieces of fabric together using the ssamsol (flat felled seam) technique that I often use when I make jogakbo. I have a finished size in mind for the piece of fabric, but the design grows as I connect pieces together. This organic process always brings me joy. BEHIND THE QUILT STARLINGS IN FLIGHT “We have reached autumn in our seasonal cushion series, and for this instalment, I have chosen to feature the starling along with two of my favourite autumn flowers, chrysanthemums and echinacea, which add some much-needed colour to this design. In the summer months, the starling has a very glossy plumage with a metallic sheen of purple and green. However, as this is the autumn cushion (and metallic sheen is not the easiest look to capture in fabric!), I have chosen to represent them in their autumn/winter plumage of black with yellow spots. It’s during the autumn period that starlings begin their very special manoeuvres. They can be seen flying together over towns and farmlands in massive flocks known as murmurations. Connecting the blocks… The final design offered in this year-long Block of the Month project is the less complex spacer block that makes a curvy chain across the quilt between the collection of twelve (12) individual designs. You have actually only been given eleven (11) blocks to play with so far, with the option of repeating or tweaking any one (1) of them to make a second version to complete the round dozen in the collection. Way back, I offered an alternative version of the second block in the series to fill this slot, but you may well have found a favourite along the way that you want to repeat in your quilt. You may call that individual creativity – I call it disobedience… sigh… Anyway, back to the spacer…
