Introduction The seven swans a-swimming are said to represent the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: phrophesy, service, teaching, encouraging, giving, leadership and mercy. This is one of my favourite blocks. My godmother kept swans on her pond. They were always free to come and go but they were so well looked after that there really was no reason to move on. She saved crusts in the week for us to feed them after church on Sunday. Sometimes we would take the boat out on the pond, always giving them a wide berth, respectful of their strength. White swans are so splendid. This block has the swan on choppy water, but anyone who has watched them glide will know this is just for artistic effect. I used a coarse white…

BEHIND THE QUILT SLOWLY BUT SURELY “I grew up making little doll quilts for my dolls and teddies using my mum’s scraps from dressmaking, cutting them into hexagons and wrapping them around hexagon templates, then English Paper Piecing the whole lot together. It’s a slow way to make quilts for sure but it’s very meditative and relaxing to hand sew a long-term hand-sewn project. This one isn’t quite as long term as some since the stars made in this quilt are appliquéd to the background rather than the entire quilt including the background being hand-pieced. I hand appliquéd the large stars but machine appliquéd the smaller ones to the background for speed and I don’t think you can really see the difference on the finished quilt unless you go in…
