BEHIND THE QUILT FULL CIRCLE “As a student studying metal work at art school, I had a secret creative side-line in sewing and knitting. When a fellow metalsmith and I heard that Kaffe Fassett was visiting the textile department to talk about colour (at the time he had a wonderful TV show about the subject), we asked if we could sit at the back to listen. We were given an unreserved no, so instead we bought tickets to a talk he was giving at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow. We love seeing what the Today’s Quilter readers have been making and here’s just a few of our favourite projects this month. From mother to son I am a Portuguese amateur quilter and Today’s Quilter reader. I had a lot of fun making this quilt adapted from a pattern in Issue 100 by Deirdre Bond-Abel. After the appliqué, I quilted the entire quilt. I quilted the centre on a rented Bernina sewing machine and the rest on my home domestic machine. It was an adventure, but I managed it! The flying geese fabrics were used from other projects in shades of blue and brown because this beautiful quilt is for my son André’s bed. BEHIND THE QUILT O CHRISTMAS TREE “The basis of the delicate Christmas trees in this quilt are the traditional pieced Tree of Life blocks. I have adapted the shape of that classic block to make trees which are shaped more like our traditional pine Christmas trees. I have added little stars onto the top by making tiny Ohio Stars which look like Sawtooth Stars with an Economy Square in the centre when they are placed on point. The baubles on the stars are raw-edge appliquéd but the template could be used for needle-turn appliqué if a more traditional finish was preferred. Borders of Lemoyne Stars in an assortment of red patterned fabrics frame the trees and add an additional Christmassy element. The lovely, simple colour palette of the fabric line…

The Festival of Quilts’ mission is to foster and celebrate the creativity of textile artists on an international stage. As well as inspiring exhibitions by individuals, groups and museum collections from around the world, visitors can also see a fantastic and diverse range of quilts in the competition gallery. Open to all, the competition is inclusive and welcomes makers of all abilities and backgrounds. This year over 700 competition quilts were on show by makers from across the globe, and here we share the winning entries from each category. BEHIND THE QUILT BALTIMORE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS “I have sewn the whole of this quilt together and found that by pinning each tacking line to the corresponding tacking line, it went together beautifully. It is well worth the extra effort put in at the beginning of the project to make sure it all lines up correctly. I really hope that you enjoy this month’s stitching and I look forward to seeing images shared on social media of your work. My best advice is to mark the final block dimensions on the back of your fabric in pencil or, if you have tacked a line along all of the edges as advised in part 1, you can pin these together and either hand piece or machine stitch along the line…
