HAVING A HEALTHY menstrual cycle is a sign your reproductive system functions properly. So for most women, periods are a minor inconvenience. But for about 30 per cent of us, the monthly menstrual cycle triggers premenstrual syndrome (PMS), a debilitating range of physical and emotional symptoms that can last for weeks. According to the National Association For Premenstrual Syndrome (pms.org.uk), this chronic condition reoccurs monthly from ovulation until menstruation.
More than 150 symptoms of PMS have been identified, including mood swings, abdominal pain, depression, fatigue, irritability, anxiety, anger, sleep disorder, food cravings, breast tenderness, bloating, headache and backache. Usually, PMS sufferers experience a couple of these symptoms every month. The causes of PMS are not yet proven but there’s evidence hormone fluctuation may be the culprit.
