The ROM’s new exhibit, T. rex: The Ultimate Predator, just opened. What is it about this particular dinosaur that people love so much? T. Rex remains the largest carnivore ever to walk the earth. It’s the king of the monsters, and it actually lived. This amazing animal adapted to various environments and sea levels over time, before being lost to extinction. The exhibit is fascinating because, if we look at the effects that those changes had on T. Rex, we can maybe predict how things like climate change will affect us going forward and gain perspective on our current extinction crisis. EARLIER THIS YEAR, when Canada announced its new alcohol guidelines, the news went down like a flat, warm lager. Gone were the generous limits of yore—which, since 2011, suggested weekly maximums of 15 drinks for men and 10 for women. The Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction spent two and a half years crafting the new guidelines, and the resulting message was a serious buzzkill: no amount of alcohol is good for you. If you must drink, keep it to two per week. Any more than that heightens the risk of cancer. At seven weekly drinks, you have to start worrying about strokes and heart disease too. AT SIX FOOT SIX and 285 pounds, Alek Manoah is a pirate-bearded, tattoo-coated, barrel chested exercise in intimidation. The new low-risk consumption limit is just two drinks a week. Is that a little stingy? The CCSA’s main recommendation is that people should consider reducing their alcohol use. The less, the better, because even very moderate amounts of consumption come with some risk. Right, but so does walking across the street. Two drinks a week corresponds to a one in 1,000 risk of premature death. When we say “premature death,” we mean a loss of 17.5 years of life, on average—so people in the low-risk category have a one in 1,000 chance of that outcome. People in the moderate-risk category (three to six drinks a week) have a one in 100 chance.
