Many great rite-of-passage movies – American Graffiti, Dazed And Confused – were made by directors reliving their youth. But Francis Ford Coppola was in his twenties in 1961, the year The Outsiders, a mythic, stylised take on growing up, takes place.
Admittedly, author S.E. Hinton was a teen when she published her classic novel about lower-class ‘Greasers’ battling the snobbish ‘Socs.’ Yet Coppola accentuates its sincerity and romanticism with honeyed light and panoramic framing. It’s earthier than Coppola’s subsequent Hinton adap Rumble Fish, but still vibrantly cinematic.
