TEASERS I love a good chase’ posted Glen Powell on Instagram when the news broke he’d be starring opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones in Twisters – a sequel, in case you hadn’t worked it out, to 1996’s windy action flick Twister, starring Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt and a swirling cow. Seems like belated sequels are Powell’s thing. Last year he became one of the hottest actors in Hollywood by turning and burning in Top Gun: Maverick. Sure, the charismatic 34-year-old Texan had been acting since 2003 (first credit: Long-fingered Boy in Spy Kids 3: Game Over) and appeared briefly in The Dark Knight Rises (Trader #1) before turning heads in Richard Linklater’s college baseball comedy Everybody Wants Some!! and Netflix’s surprise-hit romcom Set it Up, but it was TG:M that blasted him…

When I wrote my Howard Hughes script, it was the first time I’d taken on a real-life figure, and tried working from a book, and tried to find a structural approach and a cinematic approach that would give you the experience of this guy’s life. I was very happy with that script. Obviously I did not get to test the theories, because I didn’t get to make the film. OUT 16 JUNE CINEMAS Adapted by Tim Firth from his own stage musical The Band and directed by Coky Giedroyc (How to Build a Girl), Greatest Days is billed as ‘the official Take That musical’. But though its soundtrack sports sundry reworked TT songs, this is neither biopic nor A Hard Day’s Night-style caper: the focus is on five fangirls and pop music’s ability to transport us emotionally. Forty-something nurse Rachel (Aisling Bea) wins a competition to see her favourite teenhood boy band play in Athens. OUT NOW CINEMAS Santa Monica’s gamest gang of gals are back, though not best served by this frothy, tourist travelogue of a sequel, which dashes the quartet off to Italy on a ritzy hen party for decidedly undecided bride-to-be Vivian (Jane Fonda). Soaked in sunshine, Prosecco and an Italian pop soundtrack, the film opts for cute comic chaos (bag snatchings, old flames reignited, Say Yes to the Dress-esque tipsy bridal shopping) over a coherent plot. Even Candice Bergen’s saucy septuagenarian gags about ‘tasting Gianni’s meatballs’ can’t salvage this fun but flimsy Roman holiday.…

SCREEN OUT 26 MAY CINEMAS Lapland, 1944: veteran soldierturned-prospector Aatami Korpi (Jorma Tommila) runs into an SS platoon, who have their eyes on the gold he’s just discovered. Led by Bruno Helldorf (Aksel Hennie) and his second-in-command, Wolf (Jack Doolan), the Nazis relentlessly pursue Korpi across the bleak terrain. Wearing its influences (Rambo, John Wick, Inglourious Basterds) on its blood-splattered sleeve, Jalmari Helander’s actioner is both pulseracing fun and utterly ridiculous. At times it’s so far removed from reality any tension evaporates, but you can’t help rooting for the near-silent, indestructible Korpi.…

OUT 16 JUNE CINEMAS Shadows of David Lynch/Jonathan Glazer loom over writer/director Fridtjof Ryder’s feature debut, a hushed Brit-folk tale throbbing with mood and melancholy. Emerging from vaguely hinted-at institutional care, a young man (Rory Alexander) stays with his father figure (Mark Rylance). Slowly, ambiguous nods to past traumas emerge, chiefly involving the man’s missing mother. As Ryder milks the folksy surrounds and creaking, churning sound mix for murky suggestion, Alexander and Rylance anchor the psychosurreal enigmas in tender feeling. Though Ryder’s influences weigh heavy, his feel for atmosphere resonates.…

SCREEN OUT 9 JUNE CINEMAS Told with considerable heart, writer/director Jane Gull’s film charts the escalating misfortunes of a young couple, gradually forced into homelessness as aid and patience from family and friends dwindles. This British drama is particularly sharp on how the pandemic and sub-par government funding have decimated support systems both for the vulnerable and for grassroots arts and hospitality venues. Gull also spotlights the ways increasingly cash-free public spaces hinder those in poverty. Less successful are the third-act contrivances abruptly paving the way for a happy ending.…

OUT 2 JUNE CINEMAS Playwright, actor, singer, composer, screenwriter, director, talent-spotter, epitome of sophisticated English gent, queer icon… Noël Coward was a man of many talents and identities. It’s a credit to helmer Barnaby Thompson (St. Trinian’s) that this doc (marking the 50th anniversary of Coward’s death) illuminates so many aspects of its subject’s life. Narrated by Alan Cumming and Rupert Everett, it chronicles Coward’s journey from childhood to global stardom, stressing his workaholic perfectionism and capacity for reinvention. A true conversation piece.…

OUT NOW DVD, DIGITAL Formerly known as The Harbinger, this might be one of 2023’s funniest movies so far. One problem: it’s supposed to be a horror. Serving up a smorgasbord of genre clichés, writer/director/ star Will Klipstine has made an accidental camp classic - from its risible dialogue to its hysterical score and overripe performances, this story of a couple desperate to save their possessed daughter is frequently a hoot. Madeleine McGraw’s (The Black Phone) impressively impassive turn as Rosalie is wasted in a film whose title change even provides a punchline.…

OUT 26 MAY CINEMAS Writer/director Eric Gravel’s tight, tender account of a make-orbreak week for harassed single mother Julie (Laure Calamy, Call My Agent!) is a pulse-pounder that will leave you thrilled and frazzled in equal measure. Determined to get to the whitecollar job interviews that promise her kids a better life, quickthinking Julie is prepared to beg, wheedle or tell barefaced lies to get out of her hotel-chambermaid shifts and across a gridlocked Paris. Giving a fabulous, thinskinned performance, Calamy shows us Julie as neither saint nor victim, just a believably flawed and resourceful mother.…

OUT 9 JUNE CINEMAS A hairdressing competition isn’t a typical setting for a murder mystery. But like Medusa Deluxe’s stylists, Thomas Hardiman’s feature debut isn’t concerned with being typical. The writer/director has great fun with the lurid twists and turns that ensue after a stylist is found dead - and scalped - in a sprawling studio. That this darkly comic tale unfolds in a single take only adds to the exuberance of the viewing experience. You could argue that there’s more style than substance… but that’s hard to begrudge when that style is delivered with such aplomb.…

OUT 26 MAY CINEMAS Violetta, our titular troublemaker, doesn’t fit in. Desperate to become a tooth fairy like her peers, she struggles to pass muster. Visiting the human world to prove herself, Violetta (Aileen Mythen) becomes stranded and meets 12-year-old Maxie (Lucy Carolan), who’s just moved to the city with her mother, to live with her new stepfamily. The race-against-time plot (can they find the portal back to the fairy world before it’s too late?) gives rise to a strain of eco-awarenessraising, yet this remains cute but unremarkable animated fare with little to offer non-moppets.…

1991 2 JUNE CINEMAS Though there are dated aspects of this ‘91 classic - Louise’s chain-smoking waitress, Polaroid cameras, no mobiles - the feminist themes of Callie Khouri’s script and Ridley Scott’s uncompromising ending make it as fresh now as it was 32 years ago. Arkansas besties Thelma (Geena Davis), unhappily married, and Louise (Susan Sarandon), worldwise and carrying trauma, set off in their Thunderbird for a weekend away. Their girls’ trip goes south (in every way) when a parking-lot assault on Thelma ends in murder, forcing the women to flee to Mexico. En route, both their friendship and criminality grow; before long, they reach a pathos-laden point of no return. Exploring the tipping point of women in a slut-shaming, patriarchal society, the destructive nature of PTSD and the empowerment…

1975 OUT NOW BD EXTRAS Commentary, Alternate cuts, Featurette, Booklet A bomb attached to a high-speed train will detonate, killing all 1,500 people on board, if its speed drops below 8okmph… Sound familiar? However, while the plot of this Japanese thriller (starring Sonny Chiba as a heroic conductor) foreshadows Jan de Bont’s Speed (1994), the focus on passenger melodrama and resulting bloated runtime push The Bullet Train far closer to an earlier Hollywood hit, all-star disaster flick Airport (1970). Supporting features include the significantly shorter Export Cut and a look at the history of evil bombers on the big screen.…

1998 OUT NOW 4K UHD EXTRAS Commentary, Deleted scenes, Featurettes, Galleries, Booklet Johnny Depp’s bonkers bromance with Hunter S. Thompson extended to him organising the writer’s cannon-assisted funeral. Terry Gilliam’s trippy adap of the gonzo guru’s 1971 book sees the star at peak fanboy, though if anything it’s his volatile companion Benicio Del Toro who comes closest to Thompson’s drug-fuelled lunacy. Surreal, episodic and incomprehensible without subtitles, this delirious chronicle of a wild weekend in Vegas remains as exhausting as it is exhilarating.…

1953 OUT 29 MAY DVD, BD, DIGITAL EXTRAS Featurettes The biggest irony of this documentary following the British expedition that finally conquered Mount Everest is, of course, that there’s no actual footage of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reaching the summit. But even without this, the film still proves captivating thanks to the dazzling Technicolor photography. And if the plummy narration is tainted by the occasional whiff of colonialism, it still highlights the importance of the Sherpas to the endeavour. A fascinating account of a landmark event.…

No doubt about it, Stephen William’s biopic of the remarkable 18thcentury Black composer, swordsman and playboy boasts a stunning opener. Shame, though, that it promises an excitement the rest of this lush but solidly conventional drama can’t always deliver. OUT NOW CINEMAS The workplace-hangout movie gets an outdoors spin in this low-key, naturalistic Tunisian drama. Chronicling events in a fig orchard over one day, it sees a mix of young students and older men and women work while navigating flirtations, misunderstandings, sociopolitical debates, unwelcome advances and (fleeting) deeper connections. Making her feature debut, director/co-writer Erige Sehiri’s free-form storytelling captures both environment and characters (played by mostly non-professional actors) with considerable warmth. An excellent example of slice-of-life cinema.…

OUT NOW DIGITAL Two special agents (Sinda Nichols, David Girard) first interrogate, and then partner, an internet vigilante (played by writer/director Franklin Ritch) who’s developed a programme to bait paedophiles. Unfolding in three acts limited to a room apiece, this is a small but supremely smart addition to an emerging subgenre of films/shows exploring the possibilities and moral quandaries of AI (Alex Garland feature Ex Machina, C4 series Humans, 2021 movie After Yang). Lance Henriksen arrives in the third act to add emotional heft, while newcomer Tatum Matthews is exceptional as AI construct Cherry.…

OUT 2 JUNE PRIME VIDEO After a run of frivolous thrillers (like the recent Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre), Guy Ritchie struggles to camouflage his weakness for the flip and blustery with his Afghanistan war movie. Intended to honour the Afghan interpreters who were neglected by the US, The Covenant doesn’t lack promise or ambition. But it betrays Ritchie’s imprint between the banter and ballistics, even before you take the piecemeal plotting into account. It begins with US Sergeant John Kinley (Jake Gyllenhaal) and his men trying to locate weapons factories - ‘Shit that goes bang’, in Ritchiespeak. Glib badinage dominates, until an ambush leaves interpreter Ahmed (Dar Salim) and a wounded Kinley in hostile terrain. The film peaks as a tense survival and bonding story unfolds, with Salim’s fine…

OUT 1 JUNE CINEMAS, 3 JULY DIGITAL In an underground facility, amnesiac Liam (Neil Bishop) tries to find out why he’s been tripping through time. Helping him are gentle doctor Emma (Zoe Cunningham) and a strange old man (Martin Bishop) dispensing cryptic clues from the future. Director Marianna Dean’s low-budget sci-fi spans decades but keeps the action low-key, restricted to shiny laboratories and folksy stone circles. The mumbo jumbo is minimal, but the cast largely fail to imbue either the romance or mystery element with much energy. Crisp cinematography is the film’s saving grace.…

2 JUNE CINEMAS Centred on city kids tracking their grandpa’s runaway cow, this cheerfully riotous Estonian stop-motion horror comedy isn’t the Aardman-style cutie you’re expecting. Chased by chainsawwielding mutant farmer Old Milker, blob-faced Mart, Aino and Pridik must survive a bloodsoaked music festival, horny trees and a bear’s bum: this deathdealing rural adventure really earns that 15 certificate. Directors Oskar Lehemaa and Mikk Mägi love a gross-out gag, but endless poop jokes make the film feel like a succession of YouTube shorts. A farty, rather than arty, animation.…

OUT NOW BD, DIGITAL EXTRAS FEATURETTES, TV EPISODES DC’s finest receive teenage makeovers in this crossover with anime-influenced franchise RWBY, whose core world Remnant provides the setting (watch the featurette for a primer). How did Supes et al get there? No time to worry about that - there’s monster-fighting to be done, in swooping set-pieces that distract from the skimpy story. The first of a two-parter, it provides just enough reasons (tweaked powers, whodunnit cliffhanger, a fresh take on Bat-angst) to come back for more.…

OUT 9 JUNE CINEMAS Winner of the Caméra d’Or at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, War Pony is a loose-limbed drama about life on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Like Chloé Zhao’s Songs My Brothers Taught Me and The Rider, which also centre on the ‘Res’, as it’s called, the film draws cast-iron turns from non-professional leads, although that’s where the comparisons end. If Zhao’s films are lyrical and wistful, War Pony is steely and hard-edged. Marking the co-directorial debut of Australian producer Gina Gammell and actor Riley Keough (American Honey), it focuses on two Oglala Lakota males. SCREEN OUT 2 JUNE CINEMAS, CURZON HOME CINEMA Returning from Paris to her family mansion in Piedmont, entitled 20-something Amanda (Benedetta Porcaroli) is lacking direction: she has no job, no partner, no friends. In a bid to turn things around, she becomes determined to pick up again with a childhood playmate, the now-reclusive Rebecca (Galatéa Bellugi). Italian director Carolina Cavalli’s deadpan debut unfolds in a privileged yet off-kilter world, peopled by eccentric individuals. The quirkiness can sometimes be off-putting, yet Porcaroli successfully conveys her abrasive, obsessive character’s yearning for genuine emotional connection.…

Out went no-budget provocations and dog poo. In came a budget, a PG rating - and an on-its-own-terms hit. Described by Waters as his ‘Trojan horse’, Hairspray remains a winningly smooth display of mainstream infiltration, executed without compromise. Set in segregated 1962 Baltimore, the action gives Ricki Lake’s ‘pleasantly plump’ dance dreamer Tracy Turnblad a chance to strut her stuff on TV’s Corny Collins Show.
