1. CHOOSE YOUR LICK Choose a short, easy-to-repeat phrase and play it with your metronome or loop at a tempo where you’re making almost no mistakes. 2. START SLOW Practise the phrase to the click for 60 seconds. If 60 seconds is too long slow your click down a bit and try again. 3. INCREASE SPEED Increase the speed by 2 to 5bpm and play for another 60 seconds. It should barely feel any faster. 4. KEEP GETTING FASTER Repeat step 3 over and over, getting faster by a few beats per minute with each 60-second play through. 5. GO BACK TO THE START As you reach your speed limit and you start making mistakes, go back to your starting tempo – playing slowly should start to feel easier.…

In 2006, John Mayer began to follow a new musical direction, evolving his songwriting style on that year’s album release, Continuum, to bring more guitar to the laid back pop-tinged brand of soft rock that had brought him success. John always had chops (displayed early on with the fiendish finger-twister of a riff on 2001’s Neon), but, with an injection of blues attitude, a cover of Hendrix’s Bold As Love and guitar solos on nearly every song, Continuum was unapologetically framed around his six-string skills. 10 years on, you can learn how to play three of John’s best riffs from that era. Don McLean’s original LP version of American Pie is over eight minutes long, so, when the song was released as a single in 1972, it had to be sliced in half, spanning across both sides of a 45rpm record. It’s the shortened single version (ie, the A-side) that we’re looking at playing here. If you can play this part, you can play the whole song If you’ve only recently mastered open chord shapes then you can ignore the slash chords (D/F# and C/G) and just play the more basic D and C shapes in the first verse and chorus. Pitch-shifting means different things to different people. For some, it’s a simple chorus effect, while others will point at Jack White’s Seven Nation Army riff, played an octave down through a DigiTech Whammy, as a perfect example of creative shifting. BEYOND BASIC CHORDS “I’m always playing the same basic major and minor open chords. How do I sound like the pros?” Major and minor chords are great. They may be the most basic chords we learn, but all guitarists use them. The easiest way to develop your playing on from the basics is to try out some ‘extensions’. For now, just think of extensions as adding notes to the chords you already know. You can experiment by adding notes in a random way wherever you have a spare finger – but, of course, this wont always work. Get started with our first few examples, which are variations on basic open chords (C, A, G, E and D), before moving up the neck to try out some chords with a richer…

1. PRACTISE EVERY DAY A little practice every day is more effective than a long session once a week. For beginners, 20 to 30 minutes a day, five days a week is plenty. 2. Popularised by legends such as Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush and Bo Diddley, Chicago blues took the acoustic roots of the Mississippi Delta style and added electric instruments and a rhythm section. And, of course, as amplifiers became commonplace, so did the overdrive tones we guitarists take for granted today. This month’s jam track is a slow Chicago-style blues ballad piece and we’ve provided you with scales and chord shapes – all you need to play along. Typically, the blues scale and dominant 7th chords (A7, D7 etc) feature heavily. Tonewise, dial in just a little overdrive so the sound is just breaking up when you play hard. Oasis’ second No 1 single features Noel Gallagher taking lead vocal duties in place of his frontman brother, Liam. The arrangement has plenty going on, instrumentation-wise, including strings, acoustic guitar, organ and at least two electric rhythm guitar parts with Noel’s lead lines played on top. For our purposes we’ve combined the key lead and rhythm lines into a single transcription that you can follow from start to finish on one guitar. Noel’s use of the C major pentatonic scale (C D E G A) is the most notable element of the solos and in fact of his playing style in general, so make sure to practise the scale shapes. It’s hard to imagine a time when the Gibson Les Paul guitar was regarded as a bulky, unfashionable design. Well, in the early- to mid-60s that was exactly the case until a handful of exciting players began using them and, in particular, a young Eric Clapton plugged his 1960 model into a Marshall combo and turned it up loud. In 1966, on John Mayall’s Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton album, Eric produced what would become one of the most sought after overdriven guitar tones of all time – contributing in part to Gibson’s reintroduction of the Les Paul in 1968. This track begins with a calypso-based intro, and a trace of this continues right the way through the song. Van is quoted saying that it “…was just a mistake. It was a kind of Jamaican song… ” Don’t be put off by the tricky intro – it’s there only as a cue. Further down the road you can return to the song and learn it in full. In Rockschool’s version you’ll mostly be playing the vocal melody. Read the rhythm precisely and focus your energies there. The rhythm of the melody’s first phrase is repeated three times. PRACTISE FRETTING YOUR RIFF You’ve got two hands and you’ll be using them both, but practising one hand at a time lets you focus on specific skills. Start with your fretting hand and play through your lick without worrying about speed, timing or how you pick. Identify any tricky position shifts and practise them slowly. GLOSS OVER THE HARDEST BITS It may sound counter-intuitive, but ditch the most challenging techniques and you may find you can play a rougher version of your song/ solo. This is a good thing – loosely playing through a piece is an achievement and you can keep practising the hard bits. Literally just ignore problematic notes all together. WHAT IS TAB? Tab is short for tablature, a notational system used to give detailed information as to where notes should be played on the fretboard. Tab appears underneath conventional music notation as six horizontal lines that represent the strings of the guitar, from the sixth (thick) string at the bottom to the first (thin) string at the top. On these lines, numbers represent which frets you place your fingers. For example, an A note on the 2nd fret, third string, will be shown as a number ‘2’ on the third line down on the tab. In the 70s and 80s, many guitarists tossed out their original hardware in favour of heavy brass parts and overwound humbuckers to pull as much output and sustain from their guitars as possible. But what guitarists such as Chris Robertson know is that the greatest guitar tones were achieved with fairly low-output pickups. The ultimate example is the Gibson PAF, a sonic icon regarded by Jimmy Page, Joe Bonamassa, Gary Moore and others as the best thing to ever happen to their eardrums. The pickup’s low output allows the guitar’s natural tone to shine through. So, there’s no reason you shouldn’t enjoy crushing skulls with pickups that produce enough power to shame your average nuclear reactor. “YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED JUST HOW ‘FULL-SIZE’ IT SOUNDS” 1 BODY  Like Taylor’s Big Baby, the Dreadnought Junior is 15/16ths of the size of a contemporary Martin dread. The scale length is also reduced from Martin’s long scale of 645mm (25.4”) down to 610mm (24”) – it feels quite like a capo’d guitar 2 TOP This swaps the original’s spruce top for Sapele – a hardwood, and close cousin to mahogany. It gives a different sound with slight compression compared to spruce, and it looks cool, too! 3 CONTROLS Like a more upmarket guitar, there’s no side-mounted preamp to deal with here: volume and tone controls are ‘hidden’ inside the soundhole.
