Well, the rally season is underway, and it looks to be off to a cracking start. There are plenty of choices too, and it gives me great pleasure to let our What’s On page out of lockdown after almost two years for this issue (see page 57). One of the few events I’ve been to up to now has been the Woodhall Spa Country Show, and it was absolutely packed for most of the day. There is written mention of the English Goat in the period covered by the Georgian era (the 18th and early 19th centuries). Henry Stephen Holmes Pegler is recognised as the person who took the first known picture of the breed in 1872. Show records of that time also reveal that the English Goat was popular. The early 20th century saw an increase in the crossbreeding of the goat with other breeds around the world. The results of this were so successful in increasing production, especially with the Swiss breed, that some feared for the survival of the English Goat breed. It was the third time lucky for the hosts at Pencoed to hold the NVTRR after two previous cancellations because of Covid-19 restrictions. Some 420 entries turned out for the event, with over half of them being Massey Ferguson and Ferguson tractors and including a cohort of 40 modern tractors bringing up the rear of the procession. Young entrant With the participants lined up, the Reverend Glenda Oglesbee led the traditional tractor blessing. I could describe the farm I grew up on (Top Farm, we called it) as typical of many in the West Riding, mixed arable and livestock, but it was much more than that. We had a small dairy herd when I was very young, but the cows were sold off, and the farm went into rearing beef and pigs instead. Nan dealt with the chickens. Produce Crops sown included the usual mix of cereal; oats, wheat, and barley; we also grew potatoes, sugar beet, cabbage, and cauliflower. This year’s British National Ploughing Championships & Country Festival are to be held in the county of Derbyshire for the first time in the events’ 71-year history. The Duke and Duchess of Devonshire have kindly given permission to hold the event on the Chatsworth Estate on land near Glapwell, North East Derbyshire on October 8-9. Around 250 ploughmen and women are expected to take part, competing in one of 15 different ploughing classes over the two days - including world style conventional and reversible, vintage classes for trailing, hydraulic and classic ploughs, horticultural ploughing, crawlers, tractor high cut and magnificent heavy horses. RBST’s new Rare Breeds Watchlist raises concerns for Large White ‘Yorkshire Pig’ and iconic Hackney Horse and Pony breeds. The formerly prolific Large White Pig is added to RBST’s highest priority category after the breed suffered a further significant decline in numbers in 2021. The breed, known internationally as ‘The Yorkshire Pig’, enjoyed enormous popularity in the Fifties, but its numbers declined dramatically because of a trend for crossing Large Whites with Landrace pigs instead of pedigree breeding. The RBST is also renewing its warning about the future of the Hackney Horse and Pony with 2021 seeing the effective population size for the breed fall below 50. In March 1956, I reported for work at Fletch (the Massey Ferguson Fletchamstead Highway site) early one Sunday morning for the first viewing of the FE 35 tractor with three of the engineering team. This was led by Bill Beattie, the foreman, and engineers Norman Dorrans and Johnnie Gore. The photographic team was led by Bill Felton, my boss, Tony Whitehead, the senior photographer, and myself as the junior photographer. Well, it’s finally happened. In all our time at Hampstead Towers, we have never been without our summer visitors, the swallows. It has not come as a great surprise as it has been on the cards for several years. Last year we only had three come to stay with us and instead of the 20 or sometimes 30 that gathered on the wires next to the cottage before their departure back to warmer climes, there were only four or five last autumn. Decline The numbers have steadily been declining over the last few years. Ten years ago, every shed, barn, tractor store and even the outside closet had at least one nest. The International B-250 was available from 1955 onwards and was in production for five years until 1960. It was made in Bradford in what was a car factory that had produced Jowett cars and was the first tractor to roll off this famous production line. Place in time I must admit I’ve never been a massive fan of International tractors, but they all certainly deserve their place in history, especially the B-250. I think by the time I had been acquainted with this model, I’d got rather used to my Ferguson FE 35. Tractor enthusiast Doug Lasater and his wife Cheryl live in Bagdad, Florida, which is a community that began in 1840 when a settler named Joseph Forsyth arrived there and set up a sawmill along with his partners. From there, a lumber mill community was gradually established, with timber being the principal industry in the village. Bagdad is at the confluence of two rivers, the Pond Creek River and the Blackwater River, which made it the perfect spot in which to establish a port. Owner and restorer Tom Kay uses polite language to describe the late Thirties Huber OB Orchard tractor as it stands gleaming in the late summer sun on his family farm. “It was in disarray,” Kay says about the rare tractor. Build book While some people assume rarity with a particular tractor, Kay can prove it with his Huber OB. STYLE AND CLASS On Sunday, May 1, the 44th Stradsett Park Vintage Rally near Downham Market, Norfolk took place and was bigger, bolder, and better than any other previous shows Gordon Carson and his team have staged here. This rally has a good veteran and vintage tractor section, and the star was undoubtedly Oliver West’s 1916 J I Case 12-25.
