The Royal Welsh Show returns to the Royal Welsh Showground in Llanelwedd from July 18-21. Each year, the Royal Welsh Show attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the heart of Mid-Wales to come together and celebrate the best of Welsh and British agriculture. The Show is an action-packed four-day event of exciting competitions, livestock, forestry, horticulture, crafts, countryside sports, shopping, food, and drink, a 12-hour programme of non-stop entertainment, attractions, displays and much more. Many years ago, when this relatively local Eicher ES201 came in for restoration, I was very keen to get it looking right. The potential for this tractor to look good was obvious from the very beginning. The twin-cylinder, air-cooled engine started up and ran nicely, so there was no mechanical work to be done. The tinwork was all straight and rot-free. I should imagine this was because of a couple of reasons. First, it had been looked after and second, as with most tractors from the continent, the metal was thick and strong. Another thing helping the tin was the paint that was still left on it. Two awards for outstanding contribution to RSABI were presented at a Jubilee event on board HMS Albion, attended by Her Royal Highness, Princess Royal. The awards were presented as part of a range of 125th anniversary year initiatives by RSABI - which supports people in Scottish agriculture - to thank the volunteers, fundraisers, and others for their invaluable support. The award for individual contribution went to agricultural journalist, Andrew Arbuckle, and a group award to Gregor Caldwell, representing the Ayrshire Volunteer Committee. Andrew Arbuckle has raised more than £100,000 for RSABI - as well as lotsJ of smiles - through the sale of a series of three light-hearted books. Mr Arbuckle compiled the books with his late brother John, also working on two of the titles. The books are Farming…

Tractors assemble ➤ Visitors will be able to admire traditional tractors of all shapes and sizes on display on the events field on July 23-24 at the Beamish Museum, County Durham. The Norfolk Horn sheep is one of the oldest of the UK’s sheep breeds. It played a major part in the history and economy of East Anglia, with its fleeces becoming the foundation of the region’s famous worsted industry. The breed declined in popularity and by the 1890s there was just one flock left. In the Sixties, there was only a handful left. Then the last few sheep were passed to Whipsnade Park and then the National Agricultural Centre, but in 1973 the last purebred Norfolk Horn ram died. But the demise of the breed had been predicted and a back-crossing system developed involving the Suffolk, Swaledale, Wiltshire Horn and Llanwenog breeds. To keep the ball rolling, this year’s Kelsey Media’s Tractor World show took place on May 21-22 but will move back to early March in 2023/24 and will be similar to when the show first started in 2001. Excellent tractors One knew the show would not be as popular this year owing to many farmers and staff working the land with good weather predicted over the two days of the show. But despite that, the show paid its way with people coming from across mainland Europe with an excellent turnout from the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and, of course, England, with many showing off some excellent tractors here. In the late Fifties, Roadless Traction Co at Hounslow was asked by the Forestry Commission to further develop the Land Rover to work in rough terrain conditions, particularly in forestry and bog-like conditions where the normal Land Rovers were always getting stuck. Eighteen were built carrying 10 x 28in wheels and tyres, Studebaker axles and were coupled with Kirkstall hub reduction mechanisms. This example was offered in the Tennants car and memorabilia sale on Saturday, May 14 at Leyburn, North Yorkshire. Thought to be a prototype and registered in May 1959, it carries a diesel engine, not petrol like the others and disc brakes. Land Rover did not give Roadless approval to produce the 109 until 1961 and five survive today. It was purchased in 1997 by the vendor for…

Castle Douglas in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, has a long history going back centuries, but until the 1700s, the settlement was known as Carlingwark. It only became known as Castle Douglas when Sir William Douglas laid out the new village on the site of the old settlement in 1792. In 1859, the railway came to Castle Douglas, opening up a realm of new possibilities, and the village grew to become the largest market town in the area. In 1876, two brothers James and Robert Wallace, sons of an Ayrshire based implement maker, established their business in the town, and the company known as J & R Wallace. The Foundry was born. More memories from Ted Everett of his photographic career at Massey Ferguson at Fletch (the Massey Ferguson Fletchamstead Highway site). During the mid-Fifties, there was a campaign promoting milk around the UK. One of the photographic shoot locations was at the Massey-Harris-Ferguson Training school at Stoneleigh Deer Park, Warwickshire. The agency involved in the campaign had its own team of directors, film unit, photographer, etc and an agency model called Zoe Newton. What luck There were a few M-H-F staff on hand to help with operating tractors, implements, and harvesting machines, as well as for any other requirements. My boss Bill Felton, the chief photographer for M-H-F, was invited to the shoot and was allowed to take a few photographs. As luck would have it, I accompanied him to carry…

I got involved with this tractor via my son’s friend. One of his contacts had offered him this tractor, but he had no way of picking it up. My son’s Land Rover was awaiting an MOT test, so I drew the short straw as my Discovery was the only vehicle available to tow the trailer! It was a mystery tour kind of thing where we had no idea where we were heading. It was a case of “follow that car” as the guy in front knew where the tractor was kept.
