Take a lovely sunny day, 110 ladies on tractors, crowds cheering and waving, add a good shot of emotion and you can’t get much more magical than that. That was the scene for the 18th Ladies’ Tractor Road Run on July 3, once again bringing together ladies and tractors young and old to raise money for Cancer Research UK’s breast cancer research. Each year, the artistic skills of the pink ladies achieve new standards as many a bog standard tractor is turned into a pink work of art. The picnic lunch in the beautiful parkland of Gawdy Hall Estate brings families, friends, and the community together to celebrate and support a special cause. My interest in small combines probably started on a harvest day in the mid-Sixties, when on my way home from primary school, I saw an Aktiv trailed combine, bagger model, cutting a small crop of barley on our neighbour’s farm. At the time, my father had a Bisset semi-mounted binder and a Garvie thresher which he used on our own small farm and also for small scale contracting work on neighbouring farms in our area, on the borders of counties Longford and Cavan in the north midlands of Ireland. We have just finished one of the more stressful times of the summer, haymaking. I had two smallish fields to do this year. You may think I’m daft, but I don’t like to do all the cutting in one go. Floaters The reason for this goes back many years when I cut all the lot on one sunny day. Then the weather caught me out, and I ended up baling rotten black stuff and piling it up in the corner of the fields and leaving it there to rot. After a three-year absence, the Hunton Steam Gathering committee is in full preparation for its 35th anniversary gathering. The event takes place over the weekend September 10-11 in the usual farmland venue to the east of the village of Hunton in Wensleydale. The event will see further expansion to include 1000 varied exhibits displaying over 120 years of agricultural and motoring heritage on the 70-acre event site. Exhibitor highlights include 35 steam engines and 60 miniature steam engines along with an original set of steam gallopers. For the first time, the event welcomes a pair of Fowler BB1 steam ploughing engines that will be actively demonstrating steam ploughing throughout the weekend. The J I Case company was founded in Racine, Wisconsin, in 1863 and is recognised as manufacturing more threshing machines and steam engines than any other company in history. Cross-motor By the beginning of the 20th century, however, machinery making was coming of age, and at the heart of all this was an entirely new form of motive power the ‘Lightweight’ agricultural tractor. Admittedly, a little crude and notoriously underpowered, they emerged when labour was still cheap. These smaller units eventually gained a good foothold. The Fordson Super Major is very familiar to everybody who attends tractor shows or working days and ploughing matches. You can be fairly sure that at least one of these tractors will be present in one of two forms. Variants These tractors could be either the original version first launched in 1960 complete with red wheel centres or the later New Performance type. This had the revised blue and grey livery that makes these tractors look so different from the earlier machines, along with revised decals on the side of the bonnets. Using oxen in agriculture goes back to 4000BC and perhaps beyond. Yet memories and photographs of working oxen in Britain are few, as their days were ending by the time photography became commonplace. Domesday book A thousand years ago, Britain had no heavy draught horses. Our native pony breeds were much too small for heavy agricultural work, and were generally only used for riding, for meat, and occasionally for pulling lightweight chariots. However, by the time the Domesday Book was written in 1086, there is a mention of horses being used for harrowing, but no mention of them being used for ploughing. In the August issue of TFH, Ben Phillips has a feature on IH B-250 tractors. One photograph of the back of the tractor clearly shows there is no PTO guard whatsoever. I have noticed this several times in various tractor magazines. I feel it is important to remind readers how important it is to have some sort of cover over the PTO shaft. As a lot of us know, some tractors need the PTO running for the hydraulics to work. It is all too easy for a scarf, for instance, to flop down and get caught up by the PTO shaft. Hackney horse and ponies have been on the RBST Priority listings for a while. The RBST has also renewed its warning about the future of the breed. In 2021 the effective population size for the breed fell below 50, this is extremely concerning as an effective population of 50 is set as a threshold for concern by the FAO (United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization). The breed, which already had very low numbers, has seen a further decline over the past year with just 31 females producing registered progeny from only 12 breeders. Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside - Rhos-on-Sea that is - and the words of the musical hall song sums up the route the WNTRR 2022 took, writes Anne Bates. Going from sea level to over 1000 feet in the hills overlooking the resort was organised by the Clwb Tractor Dyffryn Conwy / Conwy Valley Tractor Club. The run was raising funds for four worthy charities all covering the vicinity of the Club, them being Ty Gobaith Children’s Hospice, the Wales Air Ambulance, Hosbis Dewi Sant - St David’s Hospice and the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution. Luke Bucksey grew up in south Suffolk, watching the farming unfold at the back of the family home in Glemsford. After being made redundant from an engineering firm, he went self-employed for a year and then moved to Lawshall in 2004. Business Since then, he has been “playing at haymaking” with a group of friends. They had been using bigger and bigger vintage machinery until the decision was made to sell up or continue commercially. The world’s largest gathering of Shire horses is set to return to Newark next year for a national show. The Shire Horse Society has revealed that its National Shire Horse Show will return to Newark in 2023 after a successful event at Newark Showground in March this year. This show, which is the world’s largest gathering of Shire horses, is believed to be one of the oldest, almost continuous horse shows in the world, having been held for the first time at the Royal Agricultural Hall in Islington, London, in 1878, when the charity was named the English Cart Horse Society. Staged over the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend of June 3-5 at the picturesque site of Newby Hall, Ripon, North Yorkshire, the weather played ball for a change at Tractor Fest. The venue The lords of Topcliffe Castle originally held the manor of Newby. After the death of Sir John Crosland, the manor of Newby was sold in the 1690s to Sir Edward Blackett, the MP for Ripon. He demolished the house and in 1697 built a new mansion, reputedly with the help of Sir Christopher Wren. In 1697, when visiting Newby, Celia Fiennes described it as “the finest house in Yorkshire”. The house was then with William Weddell (1736–1792), MP for Malton. He benefited from his great-uncle’s South Sea Company fortune and improved and enlarged the house during the 1760s.…

Since I started reminiscing about my European travels in the Sixties, I’ve found plenty more snaps of the less usual tractors that were to be seen in those distant days. They might make a unique record as I’m pretty sure most holidaymakers saved their film for mountains, sea, and family. Pioneers I’ll start off this time with a couple of machines with plates proclaiming Linde Ice Machine Co. Apparently Dr Hugo Güldner and Prof Carl von Linde were diesel pioneers born in 1866 and 1842, respectively. In addition to ice machines and motors, Linde-Güldner entered the tractor business in 1936 and survived, making them all the way through to the late Sixties. In the middle of nowhere, some miles from McGrath, Minnesota, US, we see how the permanent site of the White Pine Logging and Threshing Show operates its parade over the very wet September long weekend. Besides snakes in the car park, there were over 600 venerable tractors, stationary engines, steam engines, trucks, autojumble, and so much more. People certainly had a great time enjoying the many veteran and vintage tractors as they paraded on the site where many lived and only came out for the long weekend. Un-roped areas are typical of the way things happen on the many permanent rally sites that exist across the whole of the US. The family friendly event returned to Ty Uchaf farm Caerwys on July 2-3, where a variety of exhibits were on show for the public to enjoy including steam engines, classic and vintage cars, and vintage tractors. There were also military vehicles including live weapons demonstration, models, collections and many other vintage and classic exhibits. Other attractions at the show included chainsaw carving and a Marshall Threshing machine coupled to a locally built Jones Stationary bailer.
