Japanese machinery manufacturer Kubota has announced an investment in the Indian company behind the Farmtrac tractor range. With this arrangement with Escorts, Kubota aims to increase its presence in India – the world’s largest tractor market. This is part of a wider ongoing collaboration between Kubota and Escorts. In February 2019 the two companies established a joint venture tractor manufacturing company, with mass production due to start this July. The result of that joint venture will result in a tractor that looks like the one pictured. “Through this capital tie, the two companies intend to deepen their cooperative relationship further and, by leveraging each other’s strengths, create synergy across a broad range of their business,” Kubota said in a statement. John Deere Connected SupportTM is proving its worth to farmers and dealers during the Coronavirus lockdown. Service technicians can remotely dial into customers’ machines to identify potential faults in a timely manner, fix errors that may become a problem and help operators to set up or adjust their machines. This helps to maximise uptime and reduce downtime, while allowing dealers to keep their distance from customers. Over the past five years or so, John Deere and its dealer network have established Connected Support to make customer service much easier and quicker. One aspect is the company’s Proactive Response System, which provides dealers with information and warnings about machine health. A few locals from the Crymych area of Pembrokeshire put on a short tractor parade around the village in appreciation of the NHS, writes Gary Jones. With social distancing in place, around 10 tractors took part, much to the joy of the villagers watching from their gardens. Jonathan Whitlam’s description of a ‘noisy, vibration-ridden metal box’ brings back memories! Ron Johnstone, of Queensland, Australia, has been in touch regarding his four-wheel Newman (no. WD211646 and registration VD 378). He is keen to have it running and placed in a pioneer historical village, near to his home. The multi-coloured Newman tricycle is well known in the UK. One sold in Scotland earlier this year, in what appeared to be very good order, for £1,000. The WD2 four-wheel tractor is rare though, as is the E2 model. The WD2 came along in ’49 and was made in three- and four-wheel forms, powered by a Coventry Victor water-cooled, single-cylinder diesel engine that was fitted close to the bulkhead – with the water pipes running to the radiator near the front of the bonnet. Some while ago I did a series covering the rebuilding of a five-foot Votex topping mower, which was very corroded on its main framework. With that out of the way I thought I was going to be clear of any more work on similar machines for a while. However, this wasn’t to be the case, as my neighbour runs a more common six-foot version to keep his paddock tidy during the summer months. This is his second Votex, as the first one developed an oil leak in the gearbox, resulting in oil being deposited onto the drive belt and ruining it. A second mower was sought and the original was cast aside and offered to me to either rebuild or use as spare parts. A few years has passed since…

Organisers of the Lincolnshire Show have announced that this year’s event will be hosted online, showcasing the usual much-loved features, attractions and exhibitors on a virtual platform. Taking place on 24 June, the same date the event was originally planned for, the Lincolnshire Show Online will include educational and agricultural content, cookery demonstrations, entertainment, online shopping, exciting exhibitors and much more. The Lincolnshire Agricultural Society made the difficult decision to cancel the traditional show earlier this year, due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, but now promises to make the 136th show go ahead in a way that the Lincolnshire Showground has never done before. In the 1960s and ’70s, in particular, it was common for tractor manufacturers to be full-liners – in that they offered a vast range of branded machinery to suit their tractors. Not all implements and equipment were built in-house, as many were ‘badge-engineered’ to suit gaps in the tractor manufacturer’s product line. Massey Ferguson was no different – producing a range of implements itself, as well as marketing equipment built by specialists under its own banner. The Huard-designed ploughs in its tillage line were a prime example of this. PART 21 During the last few weeks I have tried to limit the effects of the lockdown situation as much as possible. However, restrictions on meeting up have meant slowing down on some of the projects currently underway, with the main one being the Dexta project. This has been due to Barrie’s absence, and also the difficulty in obtaining some consumables to progress the restoration. With things having eased up, it’s now back on track, and with the mechanical work largely complete we can now turn our attention to the tractor’s tinwork. In the June issue I did an overall assessment of all the tinwork and began working on the front cowl, which had been damaged some years ago when the tractor was started in gear accidentally, and the tractor…

PART 16 This project, although relatively simple to undertake, has been rather protracted. This was mainly due to the prolonged wet, winter we experienced, where the opportunities to progress the task were very few! However, in recent weeks the weather has settled down, allowing one to progress unhindered. There have been some jobs that I have put off during the restoration, one of these being work on the disc coulters and skims. Regular followers may recall the problems I experienced attempting to dismantle the original disc and skim assemblies, so a decision was made to put them aside and use some Ransomes discs until time allows the originals to be restored. TRADE ‘HOT’ AT SUTTON There was buoyant bidding on 18 May for Cheffins’ first Cambridge Machinery Sale to be held online only since lockdown started. The live auction kicked off at 10am to a deserted sale ground with bidding predominantly online, with some phone bidding, for the drive-through sale. All fears that the trade may not hold up were dispelled from the off when the first lot, a 1971 Massey Ferguson 165, best described as a running wreck, sold for £3,800 within minutes of the sale starting.
