A virtual ploughing event designed to fill the void of this year’s cancelled matches, and raise vital money for charity, has received the backing of a leading agricultural supplier. Goodyear Farm Tires has become a major sponsor of VPlough ’20, believed to be the UK’s first virtual ploughing match, machinery show and steam rally. All entry fees and proceeds from the events will be donated to the UK & Irish Air Ambulance Trusts. There are more than 30 classes for people to enter, including a range of different ploughing options, as well as other categories, including best vintage and classic motor vehicle and motorbike. My father bought a new one from the then IH dealer at Bednall, near Stafford, to use with our Farmall BM. This purchase was a quantum leap for us, as we had been using an M-H trailed mower behind a Standard Fordson. The Fordson was low geared and the mower had cast iron wheels, so going from place to place was a slow job. I recall going to cut the grass for a fellow farmer and noticed that the grass had grown significantly and then dropped back onto itself, which could have made cutting it difficult. As a Nuffield and Leyland fan it is always good to see something a little different. I have previously written about Nuffield tractors that have been re-powered using six-cylinder engines, which I find fascinating, but this time the conversion is a Perkins V8 – which makes for a very interesting tractor! The tractors in this feature belong to Osbert Whyte from Innishrush, near Portglenone in Co. Antrim. Both are fitted with Perkins V8 engines, with the 4/65 being the most recent project, but first up is a 10/60, built by David McCord in 2004. This uses a Perkins V8.510 from a Ford Cargo truck and to improve idling and drivability, David replaced the original injector pump with one from a Muir-Hill 171. The latest figures from the AEA show that UK agricultural tractor registrations (more than 50hp) returned to year-onyear growth in September, for the first time since February and only the second time in 12 months. The monthly total of 1,187 machines was 17.5 per cent up on the same month last year. Some of this may be due to manufacturers working through a backlog of orders that built up while factories were closed earlier in the year. However, there have been signs that the machinery market has picked up over the summer, so much of the increase will be due to these improving conditions. The total for the year to date is now up to 7,870, 22.3 per cent behind the same point in 2019. So far this year, nearly…

Longstock Rally committee members enjoyed a weekend of activities, in accordance with Covid-19 guidelines, on 12-13 September, writes rally chairman Andy Knight. Members and friends were invited for a ploughing day on 12 September with those attending temperature checked and with Track & Trace in place. The participants enjoyed the day, relishing the chance to shine their mouldboards and ‘tickle some worms’! The following day saw a road run take place, with the tractors heading into the New Forest before stopping at a pub and an ice cream parlour before arriving back at the field. Those that took part in the activities expressed their thanks to the organisers, grateful that they had an opportunity to enjoy their tractors in what has been a barren year for such events.…

Euro Auctions, Leeds, Europe’s largest sales arena for the sale of construction machinery, agricultural equipment, and industrial plant, hosted one of its largest auctions on record, attracting a good local audience and exceptional online bidding from global buyers. The sale, on 23-26 September, attracted the largest online audience in Euro Auctions’ recent history, showing an appetite for good used equipment and machinery. Seen as a true ‘home sale’ with more than 540 vendors from 23 countries, 87 per cent of those sellers were from the UK. The hammer total for the four days was £33.5 million, with prices strong, and bidding robust. PART 2 Out with the fleet! Liking nothing better than having machines from their extensive fleet out and working, members of the Rowberry family have been doing just that on occasions throughout 2020. Vernon and sons Chris and James are fans of International Harvester, but do have models from other marques in their collection too. Originality and good, clean working machines are what they like best, but they are also dab hands at restoring machines and have been winners at Tractor World Spring on a number of occasions. Q My Case International 885 has been a very reliable tractor, but is now in need of some fresh front tyres. I have been offered a pair of 28-inch tyres, which are quite cheap and I am tempted to change to this size, and to obtain some oversize rear wheels and tyres to bring the height of the tractor up, which will give me greater ground clearance. A friend has suggested that it may create problems within the transmission if I change from standard size wheels/tyres to something different. Is he correct in thinking this? When the chance arose to acquire a tidy David Brown 25D during the summer, I couldn’t resist it! It was a locally-registered tractor, in original, unmolested condition and identical to one owned by my father way back in the 1960s. It runs beautifully, with everything working on it as it should. Even the cylinder block is free of cracks, which is a bonus on David Brown tractors, as they are prone to frost damage. Having enjoyed getting to know the tractor, a close scrutiny of items, such as the fan belt and radiator hoses, has prompted me to replace them, as they could well be original, and after 64 years of service looked a little tired. Q My Ford 6610 is feeling rather poorly at the moment. After finishing this year’s haymaking, the engine started to misbehave and appears to be misfiring and generally runs very roughly. A friend lent me a compression test kit for diesel engines and each fuel injector was removed in turn and the compression of each cylinder checked. Number two cylinder read well below the other three, so there is a problem there. Also, I have noticed that the engine oil is a grey colour, and not the usual black. What could be the problem with my engine, and could it end up being an expensive fix? PART 4 Ihave been very fortunate with this tractor, in that as it hasn’t required too much in the way of mechanical repairs – the most demanding being the replacement of the seized clutch, which posed some unexpected problems, but is now functioning as it should. The next task was to move the tractor to a place where it wouldn’t be in the way, and to enable the wheels to be removed to allow access to the skid unit to clean and prepare it for some fresh paint. This was accomplished using a tractor previously covered in T&M, in the shape of my DB 990 Implematic. The big sale on Saturday 26 September was M Carey’s David Brown collection, organised by FMC Auctions Ltd. of Ballymoney, Co. Antrim. The stock offered was mostly restored and high reserves were put on the stock, but most sold very well. Some of the details on the lots were incorrect, but that did not put off the bidders, with a 1966 DB 770 12-speed selling for a record £8,400. A second red DB 770 12-speed, again restored, went on to sell for £8,100. It was a very good sale with strong prices all round. On Saturday 5 September, in good weather, H J Pugh’s 637-lot Brent Thomas sale took place at New House Farm, Pencombe, Bromyard, Herefordshire. Brent had collected wisely, sorting out the rare and unusual! The sale started at 10am and finished at 5.20pm. There were record prices from the off – from worldwide bidders, as well as on site. The lots were well laid out, with social distancing in mind. I concluded that the sale prices were 50 per cent more than the 2016 Cheffins Rackham sale, which is a good investment. There was enough to go around for most pockets too. Parts were sold to countries across Europe, Australia and New Zealand. I’m writing this on Thursday 1 October and despite the various lockdowns, life goes on as we try to make the best of things. The end-of-season events, which we usually enjoy, have all been called off and this includes my own. With any luck I hope to stage it on Sunday 25 April 2021, which is the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs’ ‘Drive It Day’ – so please make a note of the new date. If we aren’t careful, I fear that quite a few clubs may not exist at the end of all this. My concern is that they are not doing enough to retain their members.
