JCB IS CELEBRATING a major milestone for its award-winning engine. The 750,000th engine came off the line in December at JCB Power Systems, Derbyshire, where production began in 2004. Engine production was extended to India in 2011 – helping to power JCB to the landmark figure. JCB Chairman Lord Bamford said: “750,000 engines is quite some milestone when you consider that we only started manufacturing 17 years ago. So much has been achieved over that time with our engines, including two world land speed records. With the development of our new hydrogen motor, there is so much more to come and the future for our engine business looks very bright.” More than half of the 750,000 engines have been made at JCB Power Systems, which produces a range from 55-212kW.…

As crawlers go, Landini’s concept was simple and the specification fitted in well with the MF wheeled tractors in production at the time. The 134C was designed for heavy ploughing and cultivation work on medium-sized farms, but it was often used for specialist applications – such as vineyard work. Under the hinged bonnet was an AD3.152 three-cylinder, direct-injection engine, produced by Perkins to MF’s specifications. Rated at 41hp (DIN), it was a de-rated version of the unit used to power the 135QD tractor. Power was transmitted via a single-plate clutch, controlled via a hand lever, to an eight forward, four reverse transmission and conventional differential final drive. DIFFICULTY RATING Regular readers may recall the first part of this lighting project, which was in the April ’21 issue of T&M, where I refinished a pair of headlamps and fitted them to the tractor using a new pair of brackets supplied by David Brown Parts Ltd. Since then other jobs have taken precedence and the fitting of the lights has been on the back burner. Way back in 1971 we, as a nation, went decimal with our currency, and together with this we also ‘went metric’ with our measurements. This however, wasn’t an immediate change and indeed 50 years on there are still many people using the imperial measurements of pre-decimal days! Factoring in the popularity of collecting vintage and classic machinery has brought some confusion regarding what types of threads and spanner types are required, and this is dependent upon the age and origin of the machinery in question. BSF & BSW Starting with older British-built machinery, it was commonplace to use BSF and BSW threads. These abbreviations stand for British Standard Fine and British Standard Whitworth. It was a day of mixed emotions on 29 August 2021, as members of the Glamorgan Iron Horse Vintage Society were finally allowed to hold a road run that had been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, writes Dave King. It was great to be able to stage an event, but sad that some members were missing from the proceedings. The original run had been planned for 2020 to raise money for charity and the dependents of the late Adam Llewellyn, also known as ‘Donk’. The run was cancelled due to the pandemic, and while it was on hold the society sadly lost another member. Philip David had been seriously ill in hospital for many months and passed away in June 2021. He was a past chair of the society…

The 1960s proved to be a fascinating time in British agriculture. Tractors and combine harvesters were the norm on most arable farms, mechanised handling was commonplace and manual labour was gradually being replaced by new machines that lifted the root vegetables and the like. This DVD contains period footage from Lincolnshire, often captured by the farmers themselves, and documents the aforementioned changes for us all to enjoy. In terms of output, the Massey Ferguson 154C had marginally more horsepower than the 135QD wheeled tractor, at 47hp (DIN), using the AD3.152 to good effect. It was, essentially, a slightly larger version of the 134C, with similar attributes – but wider tracks and a wider track width. The 134C was great for confined spaces, but the 154C was definitely a better all-rounder. Like its smaller sibling, the 154C incorporated four bottom track rollers and one top roller with sealed bearings. The front idlers also used sealed bearings and featured a helical spring damper and hydraulic track tensioner. Suspension was via two systems. At the front, a transversal leaf spring soaked up any undulations, while at the rear a crossbar on the track carriers rested on lubricated bushes – permitting…

DIFFICULTY RATING A friend contacted me recently and mentioned that a lady he knows was experiencing some problems with her Iseki TA545 tractor, and asked if I was able to help her sort it out. A call to her confirmed that the tractor had started to overheat whilst undertaking some paddock topping, and that the engine oil pressure light had come on. She was, naturally, worried about using it until the problem(s) had been rectified. We visited and ran the engine up, which started and ran nicely with no undue noises that may indicate internal damage. The tractor featured a loader, so this was removed before we transported the tractor home to investigate. DIFFICULTY RATING My 1977 MF 550 has led a rather sedate life, particularly in my ownership, and of late hasn’t seen as much action as it should have done, owing to a loose lift arm pin. It has been started once or twice to do some drawbar work, but only for short periods, which isn’t good for any tractor. Way back in 2007, the original starter motor gave trouble and was reconditioned by a local automotive electrical specialist. Despite having a Perkins AD3.152S engine, it has never been the best of cold starters, possibly due to glazed cylinder bores. The engine doesn’t burn any oil and once running it performs very well, but since having the starter reconditioned it has had a habit of the starter motor not engaging with…

For many years, the H J Pugh & Co. Christmas Bygones Sale has been a great success. With more than 1,100 lots, it was the same as usual on Saturday 4 December 2021, when a bumper crowd turned out. There was another great selection of agricultural seats from Ireland and the best in this batch was the J & T Young of Ayr example that sold for £1,420. The second best was an F Randell example at £700, but there were plenty of good prices achieved in this section. The same can be said for the many cast signs on large display boards. I write this the day after the amazing 2021 Formula One World Championship concluded. Having been a motorsport fan since 1959 and a huge supporter of Lewis Hamilton, I am rather devastated at what was a ridiculous result in my view. I will get over it I am sure, but it was certainly controversial! A number of you have been calling me regarding the type of petrol you should be using in your Ferguson TE-A 20 and FE 35. To mark its 100-year anniversary milestone, Britains, Europe’s oldest specialist in agricultural toys and collectibles, is giving back to the industry by donating £10,000 to the educational charity Farms for City Children. Britains’ donation has supported St. Peter’s Primary School’s week-long visit to Lower Treginnis farm in Pembrokeshire, where a class of Year Six pupils have experienced life on a working farm. Following a difficult 18 months, with many children required to home school, separated from their peers and stuck inside, the experience at Farms for City Children has given the pupils at St. Peter’s Primary School an exciting educational break. Based in Co. Meath in Ireland, the newly-built, state-of-the-art Karlswood Stables has been a major project for owner and Olympic show jumping medallist Cian O’Connor. These grand equine facilities extend to 20 stables for his own horses, and another 24 are under construction for others. On top of that the complex boosts its own indoor arena and outdoor grass ring, sand ring, gallops, hacking trails and spa facilities for horses. With the grounds extending to a total area of 68 acres, the Karlswood team required a range of machinery and equipment to maintain the grounds and keep the grass well-trimmed. Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life was established more than 60 years ago by a group of local volunteers that saw everyday life changing. There are approximately 13,500 objects and 25,000 photographs and archival items in the collection. The museum has moved around the town as it has grown. In 1969 the museum moved to its present site, the old National School, and has expanded over the years, building first the waggon gallery then another to cover the newly-acquired GWR steam engine 1442 ‘The Tivvy Bumper’, in 1979, which is also the museum’s largest object. Today, the museum has a small paid staff and is supported by about 80 volunteers. It is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) and registered charity. Massey Ferguson came to being following the merger of Harry Ferguson Ltd. and Massey-Harris in 1953, but it would be 1958 before Massey-Harris-Ferguson simply became known as Massey Ferguson Ltd. Despite its successful product lines, it continued to be a forward-thinking company and looked to expand its market share across the globe. One of the ways in which it did this was through the purchase of G. Landini & Figli S.p.A. – the renowned Italian manufacturer of agricultural machinery. The acquisition of the company was announced in November 1960 and this opened up a great deal of new opportunities for Massey Ferguson, as Landini had a great history of producing equipment to suit many different applications. Despite being the most powerful of this trio of crawlers, using a four-cylinder engine, the MF 174C wasn’t particularly grand in stature either. Slightly longer, given the power unit, and fractionally wider, it was a compact model with enough power for the more demanding jobs. It was, MF said, designed for heavy cultivation in difficult soil conditions, but was equally at home on lighter jobs where low ground pressure was of more importance than out and out traction. Initially, track shoe width was 12.2in (310mm) with 14in (360mm) as an option. It has to be said that numbers were down in the tractor section at the latest Euro Auctions sale, which took place at the company’s Leeds base at the beginning of December 2021. All in all, just over 40 machines went under the hammer on the first day of the sale and, as ever, there were some quality machines on offer. A mixture of marques was represented, with age and condition determining the selling prices achieved and, as is standard for a Euro Auctions sale, everything sold – with some bargains to be had. Stags’ South-West sale concluded on Sunday 5 December and featured an excellent selection of tractors of all ages, and associated equipment. Looking good, a restored David Brown 780 sold for £2,900 (grade 2/4) needing a decent set of tyres. Perhaps the most original machine was a 1983 Matbro 40 Teleram with 1,560 hours on the clock. It went on to sell for a strong £7,250. A 1988 Case IH 1455XL (registered F35 DUJ), with 8,500 hours on the clock, attracted a total of 29 bids and changed hands at £16,750 – a low price for one of these tractors.
