THE WILTS VEHICLE & Machinery Enthusiasts is a relatively new group, formed in the latter half of 2020. Despite being newly established, the club is already planning events for this coming year and beyond – supporting several local charities, most notably the Wiltshire Bobby Van Trust and Wiltshire Air Ambulance. The group’s second event of the year, following its Spring Working Weekend on 26-27 March, will be the Easter Tractor Road Run on Sunday 17 April, which will be starting at Choppers Café in Burbage. Also scheduled is the Rainscombe Country Show, which is to be held on the 11-12 June and will be the club’s first annual show. During the first week of March, 20,000 Scottish school pupils were given the chance to ask farmers how they produce food and look after their animals. This phenomenal interaction was all thanks to the Royal Highland Education Trust (RHET), in partnership with e-Sgoil, which delivered the ‘Talk to A Farmer’ programme of sessions via the DYW (Developing the Young Workforce) Live platform. Talk to a Farmer was the brainchild of RHET, whose role is to enable more school children across Scotland to learn about food, farming and the countryside. The best way to achieve that is to allow children to interact directly with farmers, either on farm visits or via virtual platforms and events, such as Talk to a Farmer. Mark Hellier has decided to sell his superb Doe Dual Drive, no. D173. It was supplied new by Brooks of Newark, Lincolnshire. Mark has shown the tractor at Biddenden Tractor Fest a number of times and has always created great interest with the tractor, which he brought back from Germany nearly a decade ago now. H J Pugh & Co. started it’s tractor season off at Oswestry, Shropshire, on Saturday 22 January. Here the company disposed of a fine collection from a deceased estate, which featured IH, Allis-Chalmers, MF and Fordson tractors. A good crowd was seen in dry and reasonably warm conditions. The first of two highlights was an International 10/20, no. KC214482, in running condition with buff log book (grade 4.4) – selling for £4,400. The second was a 1972 Massey Ferguson 135, MEP 25K, with power steering, a flexible-cladding cab and a genuine 1,152 hours on the clock. Complete with V5C, this ex-Newton College tractor, in 2/3 condition, sold for an excellent £8,500. After a two-year break, Tractor Fest is back – and it’s bigger than ever, having been extended to three days in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Tractor Fest takes place at award-winning country house and gardens Newby Hall, North Yorkshire, over the Bank Holiday Jubilee weekend (Friday 3 June to Sunday 5 June, 10am-5pm) when the UK will celebrate the Queen’s 70th anniversary as monarch. The three-day event will showcase thousands of vintage tractors and modern marques, stationary engines, commercial vehicles, cars, lorries and motorcycles from around the UK and Europe. DIFFICULTY RATING In part one we had managed to change the loose link arm support pin and had bolted the axle housing back in place. It had been noted that the axle oil seal had begun to weep some oil, so a call to Agriline Products on 01527 579111 (agrilineproducts.com) soon had a replacement seal and a new axle shim on their way, ready to be fitted. One of the axle shims had started to break up, so couldn’t be refitted. SHIM SELECTION The original shim pack was measured for thickness, including the damaged shim, and the result noted. A huge crowd was seen at the H J Pugh & Co. two-day vintage collective sale on 25-26 February. It saw more than 2,000 lots come under the hammer at the superb Hazle Meadows, Ledbury, site. Record prices for tractors sold by H J Pugh & Co. are not uncommon and it was that way again when Andy Boyle’s Countys came on line. The first was a 1977 County 1174 (ECG 187S) with only 2,900 hours on the clock and the original-style tractor went on to create a new record for one of these models at £31,000, in grade 9.6 condition. THE ‘LIGHT UP The Night’ charity road run, which was held on 30 December 2021 and focused on the historical market town of Ludlow and surrounding countryside, was a tractor run with a difference, writes event organiser Ivor Davies. To encourage people to attend with vehicles, a promise was made that all monies raised would be split between the vehicle clubs for their respective charities, and not go solely to the host, Brimfield Vintage Tractor Club. This meant that more charities would benefit from the event. This was to be a run with a difference – open to any road legal vehicle decked out with lights and travelling at 10mph in the dark. DIFFICULTY RATING In the Spring issue of T&M I took a look over my 1947 Fordson E27N that had been on the backburner for a while, having had the rear end fully rebuilt. The remaining tasks are really cosmetic, including the repair of the footplates and mudguards. I had been storing the footplates in the shed for some time and had brought them out to work on, but returned them to the shed where I’d been falling over them for a while. I remember taking the footplates from a tractor in a dealer’s yard in East Sussex in 1986, together with a pair of mudguard tops and a radiator cap from the same tractor. These were tidied up and fitted to the tractor at the time, but weren’t perfect, so…

DIFFICULTY RATING My ’52 Ferguson TE-D 20 has been set up on the saw bench since the autumn, and has seen periodic service throughout the winter to keep us supplied with logs. However, since New Year it hasn’t been used, and now the log supply has depleted. After a dry January, and I don’t mean dry in the drink context, as February saw above average rainfall and the tractor had stood out in all of it, meaning the atmosphere was continuously damp. A few weeks ago I attempted to start the engine with no joy, either on the starter or the handle. Well here we are again! I write this having avoided Covid-19 over the past two years. Until recently I religiously wore a black mask, standing out from the crowd, and once I decided to take it off – wham! I came down with it, but that’s life as they say.
