Hello and welcome to the August issue of Tractor & Machinery. Although I’ve always got plenty to do, it’s been particularly busy these past few months – for several reasons. The main one being my involvement in organising a road run, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and Sue Ryder. As regular readers will know, a good friend passed away late last year and it was pretty much a given that we would put on a tractor-related event in his honour and to raise funds for charities close to the family’s heart. ON SUNDAY 19 JUNE, the Glamorgan Farmers’ Society organised a ploughing event called ‘Stubble to Seed’ at Cwm Risca Farm, by kind permission of Peter Anthony and family, writes Basil George. Everything relating to farming seemed to be catered for and was supported by the Glamorgan Iron Horse Vintage Society and the Smallholders’ Association of Glamorgan. Features included sheep shearing, wood carving and countless other activities, all in support of the Royal Welsh Show, when it will be the turn of the County of Glamorgan to host. Robert Edwards, of Edwards Machinery Ltd. on Pyle Industrial Estate, sponsored the ploughing and working section and thanked those that had given a good demonstration of their expertise. In July 1983, at the Royal Show, Track Marshall launched a new, smaller-sized crawler after concentrating on larger machines – such as the recently introduced and award-winning TM135. The new crawler was given a very patriotic name: the Track Marshall Britannia. Named after the home of Track Marshall, the Britannia Works in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, the company had high hopes for the success of its new product. Sadly, this never proved to be the case, and to find out why we must first find out a little more about the Marshall company and its products before the arrival of the Britannia in the early 1980s. Having said that, technology was starting to move at pace five decades ago, with synchromesh transmissions, semi-powershift transmissions, turbocharging, and four-wheel drive all having a part to play in the day-to-day lives of those involved in agriculture. It’s officially been going since 2007 but, like many other events, Tractor Fest has not taken place for the last two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It has certainly taken on a new lease of life since the last one in 2019, writes Peter Love. Held over the Platinum Jubilee weekend of 3-5 June at Newby Hall, near Ripon in North Yorkshire, the event lived up to its name and produced possibly the largest collection of tractors that will be seen together in 2022, with nearly 900 on show, from as far away as Kent and Aberdeenshire. Fordson N Q I am having trouble sourcing the correct carburettor float valve for a 1945 Fordson N. Old 20 Parts Company sent me one, but the male end is7 ⁄16in with a fine thread, whilst the female end is correct. The one I require has a1 ⁄2in male end and a course thread. When I contacted Old 20 it was suggested that my carburettor had been modified, but this is something I dispute as I have two from a Fordson F and two from an N, which all have the valve I need. As we all know the ‘grey’ prices have been holding up well, but a new trend is immerging and that is that Ford-Ferguson 9N, 9NAN, 2NAN and Ford 8N prices are certainly on the rise – if prices from four sales this year are anything to go by. There is some confusion over these tractors and their serial numbers. All 2N tractors (introduced 1942) feature a 9N serial number on the nearside engine block, but they are actually a 2N tractor! So don’t get confused when the catalogue actually says 9N, as in most cases it’s a 2N, which started at no. 105374. The last, in 1947, was no. 296131. Swiss tractor road run Dear T&M, Whilst in Switzerland, in June, I was driving over the Grimsel Pass (2,164m/7,100ft) when I came across a tractor club on a road run. I managed to stop at the summit and take a look at the tractors where they had parked up for a break. There were two Bührers – one a Super and the other a Diesel model. There was also a Deutz complete with a Fritzmeier cab and, finally, a Ferguson TE-A 20 model. The Grimsel Pass certainly makes for a very scenictractor road run. When brothers Richard and John Riseborough decided to get their extensive tractor collection out of the shed and put it on display for the public to enjoy, they probably had no idea what a success the day would turn out to be, says Jonathan Whitlam. This was certainly a sweet reward for all of the hard work entailed in getting all 70 tractors out, and then putting them away again afterwards, and with the whole Riseborough family involved, as well as many friends, everything came together – including some glorious weather – to make for a stunning occasion. Rodney Cowle sale In glorious weather, combine dealer Rodney Cowle staged his second classic collective sale at Winkleigh, Devon, on Saturday 28 May. Made up of a good number of later classics, a good proportion found new homes at excellent prices. The major lots were made up of Ford and MF, with a sprinkling of John Deere, Leyland, County and MB-trac in the 275-lot sale. The highlights were a record-breaking 1980 County 1174 at £47,000 +VAT and a 1985 MF 4880 at £41,000 (grade 10). The former was largely original with some refurbishment of the doors and other areas. Classic John Deeres In Bedfordshire Browns held an interesting sale on Thursday 15 May at New Farm, Moor End Lane, Radwell, Bedfordshire. Amongst the 300 lots was a raft of interesting tractors and the sale also saw three International crawlers offered, including a Doncaster-built BTD-20 (no. 3528). It was in original, stored condition, but had a steering clutch problem and sold for £5,000 +VAT. Other highlights were four classic John Deeres that were so so, but at least saved from the cutter’s torch. Please add VAT to all prices. Earlier this year, Nathan and Brian Tompsett took their tractors to Bodle Street Green, where both had worked in their heyday. Brian’s Field-Marshall Series 2 was with Gerry Smith, manager of John Barnes & Sons, while Nathan’s E27N worked around the corner at Toll Farm, with the Keeley family. John Barnes & Sons ran two E27Ns for threshing and sawing rounds in the 1940s and early ’50s. One of these lasted until the late ’80s at Pringle Farm, laying by the side of the field opposite the farm’s main buildings with its magneto removed.
