Hello, definitely been an and welcome to the Spring issue of Tractor & Machinery – the thirteenth magazine in the volume. 2023 marks the 10th anniversary of T&M’s Spring cover ‘date’ and not only does it provide us with an additional opportunity to bring you more on the machines you love, but it also offers added value for those that subscribe. The annual Gloucestershire Vintage & Country Extravaganza is regarded as one of the biggest and best steam, vintage, and countryside events in the UK. Set on an ex-wartime airfield, the sprawling show site covers around 200 acres and acts as a huge celebration of all modes of vintage transport. The show, at South Cerney Airfield, Cirencester, on 4-6 August, will feature nearly 1,000 classic cars, 300 motorcycles and scooters, 70 bicycles from 1903-1980, 30 miniature steam engines, 70 stationary engines, 60 full-size steam engines, 70 buses and coaches, 70 industrial trucks, classic plant and machinery, 150 military vehicles, 150 tractors, 300 commercials, from ex-emergency services to American auto trucks, plus 50 vintage caravans! STAR LETTER Life on a Sussex farm Dear T&M, I thought you would be interested in these Allis-Chalmers tractor snaps. Our farm was in the Ouse Valley, just north of Newhaven, Sussex. My father had a team of horses and a Standard Fordson N, but in 1943 he ordered an Allis-Chalmers U through Curtis & Co. of Lewes, but of course it had to go through the local War Ag for approval. At least one delivery date was lost, as the ship carrying the tractors was sunk. On arrival the U had spade lugs fitted, due to the shortage of tyres, but after WW2 these were fitted. My father was so pleased with his first U that after WW2 he bought a second one and a styled Allis-Chalmers WC too,…

In this issue I look back at what happened during the amazing 2022 sales season, which saw nearly 100 sales take place in the UK and Ireland, where veteran, vintage, and classic tractors were sold. 2022 was a catch-up year to a certain extent as, despite the pandemic, sales did carry on. As has been said previously, it was a record year in more ways than one, and it was difficult to keep up with it all. By the looks of things, it will likely be that way in 2023, too. In part one of this feature, in the March issue of T&M, Tony Reeve and John Barton explained the background to developing Massey Ferguson’s Coventry-built shuttle transmission. John continues by explaining the design aims for the new system, how it worked, and what that meant for new tractor models that would come to market. “The 12-speed manual, with three levers coming out of the transmission top cover, had been well received but did have features that the Marketing Department hoped to have improved,” John explained. “It was also essential that this option was not lost, as it was a very simple transmission that was easy to maintain in all worldwide markets.” The Synchro-12, as featured on the 600 Series and some 200 Series models, provided nicely spaced ratios, with plenty…

DIFFICULTY RATING In the March issue of T&M I began investigating the erratic governor on my TE-D 20, which involved removing the front axle and radiator to access the timing cover, where the governor weights are located. Having done this and established that nothing was amiss in the timing cover, I took the opportunity to replace the front crankshaft oil seal at the same time, and this is the stage I had reached in part one. Reassembly The new oil seal had gone in nicely and the new gasket was offered up to the engine before replacing the timing cover. The cover locates on two dowels, so the gasket was hung on those before fitting the cover. The dynamo shares one of the timing cover bolts on its bracket, so…

This account is as much a story of what good friends are, as much as it’s about a Ford 6600. Some years ago, whilst at primary school, my son, Edward, became friends with a local farmer’s son, and in his teenage years would help with haymaking on their farm. Often, when I dropped him off, I would see a Ford 6600 on the hay rake, usually left ticking over with fumes coming out of the breather! Every year I asked if he would sell it to me and he often replied: “If it was up to me, you could have it!” He complained that it had no power and was not big enough for the rake. Staged in glorious weather on 7-9 February, the 63rd Doe Show was a huge success, and a marked improvement on last year’s event. Comments made suggested that it was a breath of fresh air in the way it was laid out, and it was certainly a fitting way to mark the company’s 125th anniversary.
