THE JOHN DEERE PLANT IN MANNHEIM is celebrating the production of its two millionth tractor. About 3,300 employees help produce 40,000 tractors a year at the site, before the machines are exported all over the world. The factory is one of the most important employers in the city. John Deere tractors have been produced there since 1956, and due to the sharp increase in production the factory is now the largest John Deere production facility outside North America. Following April’s ‘Last word’, I start with good news regarding the Netherlands and various farming policies and politics in the country. A new farming political party was formed and, following recent Dutch elections, the new party and its leader had a landslide victory which will see the face of Dutch politics totally changing – with farming on everyone’s lips for the right reasons. I am looking forward to my visit to the HMT show in late July. I will also be doing a day’s commentary at the Innishannon Steam & Vintage Rally, near Cork, on Sunday 4 June. Tim Ingles It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Tim Ingles, on 3 April, aged 64. Tim will be best remembered for Midwest Machinery, Moreton-in-Marsh, an importer of Bühler Versatile equipment and specialist in articulated tractors. A Service of Thanksgiving took place at St. David’s Church, Moreton-in-Marsh, on Thursday 27 April 2023 at 2pm. Tim was a loving Father to Jack, Ellena, and Rory and a much-loved son to Jane. Organised by a small committee of volunteers, the Vale Vintage Machinery Show returns even bigger and better on 1-2 July 2023. The event returns to Ty Ucha Farm, Caerwys, by kind permission of the Thomas family. Promising to be a traditional, fun-filled event for the whole family, the show hosts a vast array of vintage vehicles, from the early days of steam to the conventional combustion-engined cars, motorcycles, tractors, and commercial vehicles. PTO safety There have been a few enquiries at T&M lately concerning the use of power take-off shafts, particularly regarding their safe use, as more people are using their tractors for their intended use. This brings with it the greater risk to users, so we thought it useful to bring you some tips and information to make the use of PTO shafts as safe as possible. There are two standard speeds for PTO shafts, the lower and more common speed being 540rpm, whilst the higher speed used on large, power-demanding implements is 1,000rpm. With shaft rotation at these speeds with tractors running at their peak output, there are many potential dangers. GUARDING The main and first step towards safe use is the correct guarding of the shaft between the tractor and implement.…

We are well into the spring sales season, and I am not disappointed at the way it’s been going. People are still investing in preservation machinery, particularly from the ’60s onwards One thing is very clear – Ford/New Holland Series 40 models are now taking on a greater importance, with a clean, original example selling for £20,500 with 9,800 hours on the clock. A restored example made similar money a couple of weeks later. It’s clearly the time to look around for some straight examples of this type before they are all snapped up. Anew club has been established for tractor, engine, and agricultural machinery enthusiasts across the North East. The National Vintage Tractor & Engine Club (NVTEC) has groups across the UK, including clubs covering North and West Yorkshire. The North East club is the latest to join NVTEC and has already attracted more than 30 members, covering a region from the River Tees to the River Tweed in Scotland. The club will be taking part in this year’s Tractor Fest held at Newby Hall, Ripon, on 10-11 June, with some club members exhibiting their tractors. THE NATIONAL VINTAGE TRACTOR ROAD RUN (NVTRR) will take place on Easter Sunday, 31 March 2024. The circular route will travel across the picturesque South Downs from Plumpton College, with on and off-road elements encompassing the national park and sea views. Launched at the 1971 Royal Smithfield Show, at Earls Court in London, and officially in production at the company’s Barton Dock Road, Manchester, site during the summer of the following year, the Massey Ferguson 1200 was billed as “the world’s most civilised tractor” in marketing material. The tractor was said to be designed around the operator, with the purpose of achieving maximum effective performance from both and man and machine. I look forward to meeting new people at the Somerset Vintage & Classic Tractor Show, and this year’s event was no exception. This time I was lucky enough to chat with Ken and Lee Marsh, plant hire and groundworks contractors from Bridgwater. Their two-wheel drive, 1989 Ford 7810 was one of the stars of the show, having recently been restored for them by renowned Somerset Ford and New Holland contact Ken Boobyer. The project saves a notable model for the rally scene, but also represents the tractors of the local Sedgemoor area, especially those supplied by L F Jewell Ltd. of Bridgwater – a fondly remembered main dealer. “I have always been around tractors and engineering, often Ford,” explained Ken. “I grew up with my grandfather and father, who always…

On 24-26 March, the Practical Classics Restoration Show took place at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, with almost 30,000 people attending. On the Saturday, Classic Car Auctions staged a large preservation vehicle sale. It included three tractors, which car owners paid ‘hot’ money for. This included a restored Fordson Super Dexta with silver wheels. The colour scheme did not put people off and after just two bids it sold for a staggering £8,000, when the tractor is worth approximately £5,000. As for a David Brown 770 Selectamatic with 12-speed transmission, it sold for a record price for one of these tractors at £9,000. A restored Lamborghini 1R sold for an impressive £11,000. It was stated that the vendor would pay the import and apply for NOVA paperwork.…
